I don’t know. Try using both. Perhaps it’s a fail-safe.
Another thought: Hardware ages, especially the power adapters that power our modems (Ziggo/KPN), routers, switches, access points, etc. Often unexpected, but a device in your (wired/wireless) chain may not be stable
But it seems to me this thread is evolving and I am not sure we are all having the same issue. Let me try to summarize, but feel free to correct:
We are NOT anymore talking about the internal error encountered when turning on Synchronize with Google
We are talking about “being offline” in these cases:
A. After linking to Google Home or rebooting, all Homey devices in Google Home are online but go offline after some time (@Prom , @Michel_Bos )
B. After linking to Google Home the first time, all Homey devices in Google Home remain offline (@Rrrr ):
1. With a exclamation mark (iPhone)
2. With Loading… in the icon (Android)
3. Moreover, the devices are not per room/zone but all together (which Athom confirmed was caused by a change in the Google API).
C. Homey going into offline modus and (therefore) not being able to add new devices in Homey (@Michel_Bos )
D. Philips Hue devices connected via Matter to Homey, going offline after some time in Homey (and therefore Google Home) (@BenD ).
These cases have similarities and could be caused by the same issue, but it is not guaranteed. So I suggest to first focus on making sure your Homey is stable and online before we continue with Google Home devices being/going offline.
I leave it to @Michel_Bos to confirm what his thread is trying to solve otherwise we’ll get all confused.
To answer your question: I have a Google ethernet adapter and my Homey is never offline, I never reboot it and I am on both LAN and WiFi at the same time
Homey is locked to the closest Unifi access point which is excluded from channel optimization and Global AP Settings. Homey has no fixed IP, but DHCP lease time is 86400s
Something I would like to know, what about the internet connection? E.g. I have delta fiber and they don’t have a router that can operate in bridge mode. Effectively giving me NAT over NAT is it?. Because my unifi is operating as my “main” router. DHCP leasetime of the Delta router is 24 hrs, maybe something to do with it?
But until December 2023 it used to work without any problems….
I have made this other topic to have an overview of all ‘Homey offline’ related issues. So this issue only started as ‘Google connection lost and repairing it in Homey gave an internal error’.
So the goal is to have Athom come up with a solution for this ‘offline’ issue, while in the meanwhile we try to make ouyr lives as ‘victums’ of this issue as easy as possible AND support Atrhom with cases that do an do not work.
Thx for sharing that you use a Google ethernet adapter and that your Honey is never offline. So now I know 2 HP23 users NOT experiencing this offline issue!! Both don’t use the Athom delivered ethernet adapter… Foof for thought…
Since Users where all is good do not necessarily follow these topics, I repeat my question to all that struggle with the offline issues:
Hi there. 5 minutes ago, I changed the Homey LAN adapter by a Google LAN adapter. I realy hope this is it! BTW: I have made the new IP adress static.
And removed it for it gave problems with my Rithum connections…
Not only the adapter, but the WiFi network settings are critical as well.
Homey needs a stable access point, see posts of @BenD above who hopefully seemed to have fixed his specific issue
This is unlikely to relate to the Homey offline issues so if you have further questions open a new topic or DM me.
The provider is probably not related and if you use two routers then yes, it’s NAT over NAT (which is quite common especially since most people don’t realize they can put eg mesh networks in bridge/access point mode).
As long as your unifi router is the only device connected to your Delta router and you turned off wifi in the Delta router, you should be fine.
In your case when the second (unifi) router provides DHCP to your devices (and unifi access points if you have them), then the lease time of the Delta router is indeed not relevant, but a decent minimum is required.
I bought my own fiber optic adapter that converts optical signal to Ethernet and plugged it into my USG router. But I’m not in NL so can’t help with options for you. Search in the networking communities to find out more.
Up to now, I am over 48 hrs without problems. Hope it’s stays this way. What did I change? I changed the usb-c cable between my homey and the lan-adapter. It’s a long shot I know, but hey I just want the problem go away. I am on wired lan and no wifi.
