Matter 1.3 Specification Released - Will power monitoring now be supported by Homey?

Hi, I did some testing with the NOUS Smart Matter Socket A8M. Socket is connecting to both Homey and Home Assistant perfectly over Matter. However in Homey no energy consumption sensors are available, in home assistant it is working :

Looping back the plug in homey via Home Assistant Community App can provide energy usage if configured correctly (providing the sensor.a8m_vermogen as energy entity in advanced config):

LEFT : Plug via Home Assistant App, RIGHT : Directly matter connected in homey.
Hopefully a new homey firmware release will solve this soon as these plugs are very reasonable priced at amazon

Just for your information, EVE has officially released the 3.5.0 FW for their EVE Energy plugs supporting Matter 1.3, no 1.2 + custom clusters. It’s currently being deployed and my devices are updating ATM, although very slowly. Let’s see what the outcome of this will be

I updated all my 14 Eve energy plugs and connected it to Homey using iOS. Now the plugs are reporting power consumption as expected to Homey:

And here the chart in Homey insights report:

Great news, I have a EVE Energy here,
how did you update FW?
I am searching but can’t find clear reference from their site how to update it.
removed it from Homey and connected using the Eve Android app to my Google Home but still no FW update options found.

Edit: It already updated automatically from the Google Home
Don’t know it Homey also is able to do that trick.

I have the updates running through Apple Home. Of the 12 EVE Energy plugs only 6 have been updated. The rest stays stuck on FW 3.2.1. Already waiting for 2 days for the rest to update. Really takes a while. It’ s a known problem and I’ve read on Reddit that other people are struggling with this as well. Apparently resetting (pulling the plug and then back in) of the Apple HomePods and ATV Border Routers should help. Doesn’t seem to enhance anything here though.

Sorry, regarding MSS315, I think I missed the point. Are power measurements supported by homey / if I don’t see them, then what do I need to do to fix is, or should Meross fix things first, or should I wait for Athom to fix things?

@RogerSt Meross should first release a FW in which they support Matter 1.3 and not Matter 1.2 and custom clusters like they do now. The latter is only used in their own Meross environment (app) but is propriety and therefore not usable in e.g. Homey. Exactly what EVE has done as well. It would be particularly difficult for Homey to support all the different propriety implementations of those custom clusters. So once Meross launches a real Matter 1.3 FW you should be good to go in Homey as they support Matter 1.3.

Meross has released the Matter 1.3 update for their smart plugs. We’ve implemented a small fix related to their Matter integration, and it’s currently in testing. The update will be available in the beta build soon!

@Doekse, Do I have to connect it to Google Home or another supported Matter/ Thread gateway to update or is this also a feature of Homey’s Matter stack?

The Homey Matter stack currently doesn’t support OTA functionality, connecting the device to any other Thread border router that does support it should do the trick.

Eve plugs can only updated with apple o think?

I just succesfully updated both my Eve Energy Smart Plugs to FW 3.5.0. They are now reporting power consumption in Homey.

I did the update using Android and Google Home. So no need to have an Apple iOS device!

The steps I did for the update:

  1. Removed the device from Homey
  2. Downloaded the Eve for Matter app on the Google Play store
  3. Selected my Google Home network inside the Eve for Matter app
  4. Installed the Eve Energy Smart Plugs inside the app
  5. After the firmware update reĂŻnstalled the Eve Energy Smart Plugs to Homey

The Eve for Matter app initially showed FW 3.2.1 for my smart plugs. After appr. 18 hours (during the night) both plugs received the FW 3.5.0 update.

Extract from the changelog of the Firmware v12.4.2-rc.6

Matter

  • Fixes power measuring sockets not reporting data (requires repair of the device).

@Doekse, Matter Shelly Plug S MTR Gen3 (S3PL-00112EU) still not shows any energy data. Whether connected via Homey Pro or via iOS. The Plug can only be switched on and off.
Homey Pro Firmware: v12.4.2-rc.6
Shelly Plug Firmware: 20240820-134301/1.2.3-plugsg3prod0-gec79607
Acc. the info in the device settings of the Shelly smartphone app, the FW seems to be the latest for this device.

Any information about this problem or suggestions?

Note: I also posted the info on Slack.

That’s weird! I’ll tag the right colleauge on Slack, thanks for letting me know.

Not sure whether relevant, but I updated my Shelly devices to firmware version 1.5.1 last week. Including a Plus Plug S (non-matter, gen 2).

Based on their change log, this is the latest stable version for gen2+ devices.

It took several weeks though before this version became available to all devices.

Are you sure that Shelly Matter Gen3 plugs do full Matter 1.3? I thought they were still doing Matter 1.2 + Custom Clusters. Could be mistaken though.

I’ll also ask the Shelly team for some samples for internal testing, keep y’all posted!

According to CSA the Shelly Plug S MTR Gen3 is based on Matter 1.2. You‘ll NOT get Energy Reporting until Shelly updates their firmware to Matter 1.3 or Athom implements the polling of the custom clusters Shelly is using for their Energy data. And polling is not the way to go especially in larger networks.

Hi @Doekse,
Thanks for your support! The energy consumption is now correctly shown for the Meross mss315  Great that you were able to solve this quickly and kept us informed. Kudo!
Georg

PS.: Meross even showed a message that the firmware update would support Matter 1.4 now (see below)

FTR: Homey Pro: 12.4.2-rc.7, mss315: 9.5.48

To be honest, I don’t know which Matter version is installed on the Plug S MTR Gen3. I can’t find any reliable information on this.

As @mluecke already mentioned, acc. to CSA the Shelly Plug S MTR Gen3 is using the Matter specification v1.2:

But the info about the Matter version refers to the Shelly firmware v1.2.0-s1 and my plug has a newer firmware v1.2.3 installed.

I can’t find any detailed information about the Matter version on the Shelly support pages, not even on the by @SunBeech mentioned changelog page. When I open the linked page regarding Matter, it shows only something about version 1.0:

Another page states this:

So it seems that Shelly doesn’t provide detailed information about Matter, or I haven’t been able to find it. Nevertheless, the reason for the missing energy data will most likely be an “old” Matter version. :man_shrugging:
