IKEA Vallhorn Motion sensor

Thanks, actually in my case the trick was 4 short clicks in 5 seconds and not one click per second. Red light flashes and connection was within seconds.
Using 1,2V rechargeable batteries.

This was a very good thread to read. I used normal batteries to begin with (1.5V) and got a bunch of false activation.
I also had one pcs of Vallhorn that only sent a Motion Alarm activated. But never a deactivation.
Regardless of setting in Homey.
If I pressed any of the setting buttons on the unit it sent a deactivation followed by an Activation and then silence.

Chatted with support and they sent me a new one. 2 days later I got it in my mailbox and it works perfectly.

One thing I’m trying to find though is the possibility to code a AND statement in a Flow against the current LUX value. IE: If the LUX is below 2 then…
But the only possibility I’ve seen is to use a Var. And in a flow use the When statment for the Lux value.
Meaning. When Lux > 2 set Yes/No Var to No. When Lux < 2 set Yes/No Var to Yes.
Then I can use that Var in the flow. It feels intuitive though to use the Lux Value directly in the flow. But Either they missed this or I don’t see how to access it??!

A sidewise jump here. As the Vallhorn is equipped vith a light sensor that gives a value in lux - how on earth can I use that value to trigger or not trigger a response? Say I want to turn on a lamp when movement is detected AND the light level is below a specifies threshold. Using advanced flows I can only get it to trigger when the light changes to a specified value.

The illumination value is probably provided as a tag, so you can use a Logic card to compare its value against your threshold:

IF motion is detected AND (illumination tag) < 123 THEN turn on lamp

Aha, I’ve never tried the Logic cards… but they seem - erm, logical? I’ll give it a go.
Thx Robert

Yep that did it. :ok_hand:

Anyone else get really short battery life on Ikea Vallhorn? I get only a couple of weeks before the sensor begins to flash red indicating the battery is running out of juice. I am using Ikeas own rechargeable batteries new and freshly charged. Connecting it directly to Homey Pro 2023 with no Ikea hub.

just wanted to check in on hows everyones experience is so far on this sensor? i’m planning to switch some z-wave aeotec sensors over to this one. having too many problems with them and i suspect it just comes down to the poor implementation/range on the homey hub.

I have four of these, added via Matter on the IKEA hub, and been very happy so far

i would be adding these directly to my homey pro hub. some people had varying results when generally using ikea devices on the homey hub versus ikea hub.

Its a pain to add them. Mine was working great for the longest time and then suddenly 2/3 was not detecting motion, even though battery said 60-70%. Tried restarting Homey, no go. Had to remove them from home, tried to add them again, same issue as many others report. Tried many times, homey could not detect them. Restarted Homey again and then it started working.

i haven’t had much trouble with the vallhorn motion sensor. I’ve only had trouble with the parasoll door/window sensor with its battery life. from what I’ve read its a known issue with it being connected to Homey apparently. having that added to an ikea hub which the ikea hub is connected to Homey isn’t a problem from what i’ve read.

from what I’ve learnt using ikea devices with Homey and my previous smartthings hub is that the battery indicator on the app was never useful till it was at 20% or low battery. keep in mind that the ikea sensors do specify that they need to use the 1.2v rechargeable batteries.

if you had restarted Homey im thinking that maybe your zigbee mesh network may have re-configured itself. is there any powered zigbee devices near your motion sensor? with my previous hub using smartthings i was able to see where it was hopping in terms of the network. i don’t think I’ve seen one specific for ZigBee on Homey.

keep in mind that WIFI 2.4ghz can also cause some interference. I’ve messed with my smart home hubs too much to the point now for the most part the network for ZigBee and z-wave is stable. you may need to change your WIFI channel to avoid any interference.

i did start off with putting my problematic device right near the hub just to rule out any issues with the mesh network. I’ve got many ZigBee powered devices where i haven’t had many issues other than the odd powered ZigBee device needing a restart. which only happens maybe once every 3-6 months.

not sure if you used the Homey developer tools site but here it is - Homey Developer Tools . i mainly use this to check my z-wave devices. its very useful for z-wave devices as you can see where your devices are hopping to in terms of the mesh network. i was hoping the same for zigbee but it doesnt show that.

It does with the Early (Pro) 2016-2019 models. From what I’ve read Athom omitted the zigbee overview tools for the newer models because they would have stated users bugged support too often about non-existent issues (misinterpretation of data).
Still it’s very very basic compared to zigbee2mqtt.

oh ok. thats interesting. would have been nice if it were an option that we can toggle on to see even if its not 100% accurate. better than nothing at all.
