[APP][Pro] Apple Find My

@Freek_van_Beenen did you make sure you don’t have any special characters in your password? We know that a @ works
But most others not

Within the password is a: & and ! I will try later.. Thanks

Hi,

It is quite difficult to find relevant information in this thread. There are so many replies that I can no longer see what applies to my situation and what does not.

I have tried searching through the discussion, but I cannot find a clear explanation for the behavior I am seeing. Some of the reported issues are similar, but not exactly the same as mine.

Could you please point me to the relevant post or let me know whether the behavior I described is expected?

The authentication issue seems to be resolved and I can log in again.

However, I noticed that some devices are still not updating correctly.

For example:

  • iPhone 14 (re-added) shows updates from a few seconds ago and appears to be working normally.

  • iPhone 16 (Freek) still shows old timestamps ranging from 4 to 14 hours ago, and the server request interval field even shows “one month ago”.

This device was actually the first one that reappeared after the authentication issue was fixed, which makes me wonder if it is still using an old/stale device record.

I already re-added two devices and those seem to behave differently.

Is it expected that some existing devices need to be removed and re-added after the authentication issue, or should they eventually start updating again on their own?

@Freek_van_Beenen most of the time it helps to login on Find Devices - Apple iCloud as that will sometimes trigger a resync.

also i don’t see any new report.? The one you linked is a old one you already sent that one yesterday

Next to that there’s no specific post to point you to

Hi Martijn,

I logged into Find Devices on iCloud as suggested, but unfortunately the devices are still not updating in Homey.

Regarding the report: I thought I submitted a new one, but apparently it linked to the old report. Could you explain how I can create a completely new report so you can see the latest diagnostics?

@Freek_van_Beenen check: [APP][Pro] Apple Find My - #3 by martijnpoppen

Hi Martijn,

I’ve installed the app! I’d like to create an automation so that when my iPhone comes within a certain distance of my home, the gate opens automatically.

Anyway, after installing the app, it says I need to sign in with my Apple ID. I’ve been looking for over an hour, but I can’t find where I’m supposed to sign in. When I try to create an automation now, the Find My app doesn’t appear as an option.

What am I doing wrong? I haven’t been able to sign in anywhere in your app yet…

@T_K this is an English topic. Please edit and translate your post

You have to add a device like you add a light bulb. Then you will get a login

Okay, that clear!

I’ve added a new device, and it does indeed prompt me to sign in. However, I keep getting the error message: “Error: Unauthenticated.”

My login credentials are definitely correct. I just used the same Apple ID to sign in successfully on my phone and to the Find My iPhone web interface on iCloud.

@T_K make sure to remove any special characters from your password. A @ does work

Thanks for your reply, Martijn! I figured it out.

My Apple account is linked to two email addresses. One is a @gmail.com address, which I’ve always used to sign in everywhere. But there’s also a second @icloud.com address. I can log into your app using the @icloud.com account.

It’s a bit strange that the other @gmail.com address doesn’t work, since that’s the one I always use everywhere…
Last but least; it works!

I’m hoping you can help me with this, as it’s driving me crackers :exploding_head:

I had the Find My device, with a number of Advanced Flows using it, working perfectly fine for months. Then around 2am a couple of days ago it just stopped updating. I tried running a repair a number of times (using copy and paste of the exact same credentials from my password manager as were originally used to set it up, and as work fine logging in to the find my/iCloud web site). But every time I clicked the button on the password entry it would blank the screen and just show a “loading” message n symbol, and would probably sit there until the end of time like that (I got bored after several minutes of no change).

After several failed attempts of it just hanging, I tried the other email address I have aliased on my iCloud account, but that instantly returned an error of failed to authenticate.

I then tried removing the device card, and re-adding it. But the same result.

So after a little head scratching, I decided to try power cycling my Homey Pro, maybe a clean boot would help. But all it did was change the error I received back slightly.

And now I have a bunch of broken flows because it won’t let me re-add it. I’ve tried changing my password, and creating a new app password in my iCloud account (even though the original passwords worked fine with my iPhone and other devices) and the new passwords work perfectly fine with my iPhone and other devices, just not the Homey FindMy app.

@Drako74 make sure to remove any special characters from your password. A @ does work

Hi @martijnpoppen

The app specific passwords are auto-generated by iCloud, I am unaware of any way to customise them. They contain alphanumeric characters and “-“ only, no other special characters at all. This had been the case since long before I started using the Homey FindMy app, and has always worked. The same app specific password that has worked for months, stopped working around 2am on the 20th, without me making any changes.

I have tried generating a new app specific password, and I tried doing a repair many times. Then I tried removing and re-adding the FindMy device card, and now I can’t re-add it, using the exact same credentials I originally used to and it, or a newly generated app specific password.

@Drako74 did you try it via the Homey webapp? Sometimes that works.
This is really a quirk in this app which i never could figure out. It seems like apple sometimes blocks a login with no reason

I have a bit the same issue. Also since a day or 2 suddenly reported 5000 km from home. Sometimes it was ok again. Then I decided to update my Apple ID and since then not able to add devices. I also get the error: Unauthenticated

I had not, but I will try that in a bit (just walked in from going to see The Odyssey at the IMAX… need dinner first  nom nom) I will report back once I have given it a try, and any other things I can think of to try.

I was hoping the diagnostic report would show something up (wishful thinking I know ).

It’s a real pain that the iCloud app specific password doesn’t let you designate your own, and just spits out random alphanumeric characters with “-“ dotted in it.

And I just tried adding via the Homey webapp but get the same results.

Tried it, and same problem… first attempt I get the “Error: Error: Failed to authenticate” response. And all subsequent tries I get the “Error: Unauthenticated” response.
I also tried logging in to my iCloud account from the desktop browser, and creating another new app specific password. Same problem and result. And I tried logging in using my “@icloud.com” account email address, also the same problem and result.

What’s been working for months now, just doesn’t work anymore since about 2am on 20th. And the error messages are about as helpful as a chocolate teapot.

I do find it a little odd that the error message for the first attempt with a set of credentials is different from subsequent attempts.

Really annoying, I’ll check if i can reproduce. Maybe apple patched something, but who knows.
I’ll come back on this
