Adding an Aqara product to Homey Pro via an Aqara hub: what to do?

Aqara hub can be connected to Homey as a Matter Bridge. That’s how i was able to do it

I managed to get an Aqara thermostat into Homey through the M2 Matter bridge.

The thermostat initially did not show up in Homey, even though Homey Developer Tools could see a Thermostat endpoint on the M2.

What finally triggered it was adding a new Aqara Door and Window Sensor T1 to the M2. When that new sensor was synced to Homey, Homey updated the Matter bridge and brought over two additional devices at the same time — including the thermostat.

So in my case, adding a new supported Aqara device seems to have triggered a refresh/rescan of the bridged devices that “Update Devices” in Developer Tools had not managed to do.

One odd thing: both newly discovered devices were added to the Bathroom zone rather than Home. My guess is that Homey uses the zone of the bridge/default Matter device when creating newly discovered bridged devices, rather than preserving any room assignment from Aqara.

Yes, new devices always show up in the same area where the bridge is.

Not for me, when I instal a new device via my Aqara bridge, it will not coming in Homet Pro :frowning: - And I have connect them. I hope that I have it just good connect.

It can take a little while for them to sync up. If you want to force the update you can go to the Aqara hub settings in the Aqara Home app and select the restart the device option, and any new device(s) will then sync up and populate on your Homey.

Hi there!

I hope you managed to fix the issue. I have a question: which Aqara devices don’t show up in Homey Pro after being added to an Aqara hub via Zigbee?

I’m having a similar issue. I noticed that some Aqara devices automatically appear in Homey Pro, while others don’t. I’m starting to think that the devices that don’t show up may be Aqara devices made exclusively for the Chinese market.

For example, I bought the Aqara Air Quality Monitor S1, but it won’t show up in Homey Pro no matter what I try. On the other hand, devices like the Z1 Pro switches do appear in Homey Pro, but under a different icon and name, with very limited functionality—basically just on/off.

So, my theory is that if a device isn’t fully supported by Homey, it simply won’t be exposed or reflected in Homey Pro, even though it’s connected to the Aqara hub.

Have you noticed the same behavior with your Aqara devices?

Matter Bridge only supports some device types, and only certain functionality of bridged devices. Similar to how connecting Aqara devices by Zigbee gives far more functionality and settings than connecting the same device via Matter over Thread. Matter provides more varied connection options, but sacrificing some more advanced settings/functionality. Whereas Zigbee usually provides the full feature set, but has to be specifically supported by the host.

Supported Bridged Device Types for Aqara Matter Hubs

Through the Matter bridge, Aqara exposes a wide variety of child devices to third-party ecosystems:

  • Sensors: Contact, occupancy, motion, light, temperature & humidity, leak, pressure, and smoke/CO alarms.
  • Switches & Lights: On/off wall switches, dimmer switches, wireless buttons, and dimmable/CCT/RGB lights.
  • Plugs & Outlets: Smart on/off plugs and dimmable plugs.
  • Covers & Climate: Curtains, shades, thermostats, fans, air purifiers, and air conditioners.
  • Advanced Sync: Aqara’s advanced bridging also supports syncing custom scenes (as virtual plugs) and automation signals/triggers (as virtual occupancy sensors) into third-party ecosystems

Note that only these Aqara Hubs support Matter bridging: Hub M3, Hub M2, Hub M1S Gen 2, Hub E1

Okay, I have a “late-night idea” :joy:

I have an Aqara T2 GU10 spotlight, which supports both Zigbee and Matter, and it’s fully supported by Homey Pro.

So here’s my idea:

If I add the T2 GU10 to the Aqara M3 Hub via Zigbee, it will automatically be exposed to Homey Pro through the M3’s Matter Bridge.

But since the T2 GU10 is also a native Matter device, what if I add it again directly to Homey Pro as a Matter device?

I know it’s already added automatically through the M3, but I’m wondering if adding the same physical bulb separately via Matter would give me the original/proper Homey device icon :joy:

Is this actually possible, or would Homey recognize it as the same device and prevent me from adding it twice?

Basically, my goal is to have the T2 GU10 connected to the M3 via Zigbee for Aqara, while also having the same bulb directly connected to Homey Pro via Matter—with the proper Homey representation.

Hi @Fahad

Slight problem with that idea… the bulb is incapable of running both Zigbee and Matter over Thread firmwares simultaneously.

Also, the device ID would be the same, so Homey would only detect it as a new device to add the one time… so even if the bulb was (which it most definitely isn’t) capable of running both Matter over Thread and Zigbee, you can’t add the same device twice.

EDIT: when exposing Zigbee devices over a Matter Bridge, it is the Matter controller that converses Matter to the client Hub, not the actual device. Effectively the Matter Bridge is acting as a client device and then translating and relaying the commands to the actual device over Zigbee.

Oh I see. Thank you :folded_hands:t2:

Thank you, it is working. Wow, I’m so happy!

Only my smart pat feeder is not yet in Homey. Is it possible that this smart pat feeder is not working in homey pro?

If it is being added directly to an Aqara hub with the hope of it being Matter Bridged over to Homey, have you checked the pet feeders documentation to ensure it is Matter compatible?
