Something big, yet small — speculation about 18th December launch event

At the end of yesterday’s live announcement, @Doekse hinted at another big—but small—announcement coming next week. Any guesses on what it could be? :eyes:

New Homey Pro with CM5 ?

Seeing the recent focus on the mobile app, versus the web app (no Dashboards and Energy for the web), I’d love for advanced flows to come to the mobile app or at least tablet. That would mean that almost all features of the web app would be available in the mobile app.

It would be something big (infinite canvas), on something small (phone/tablet). :eyes:
But I doubt it’ll happen anytime soon.

A new firmware to make Homey stable? *1
A new firmware so that Homey no longer has problems with Aqara devices? *1
Matter 1.3?
The possibility to update the firmware of Z-Wave and Zigbee devices?

*1 To be honest, I was joking a bit because I don’t have any notable problems. But the forum is full of posts about problems.

It’s got to be the previously-trailed native device grouping feature. Something small (single device group) contains something big (many devices).

And the problems are often sitting in front of the screen! :man_shrugging:

ChatGPT says:

Athom’s teaser for its December 18 launch event, hinting at “something big, yet small,” has generated significant speculation in the smart home community. Recent developments, such as the release of Homey Energy and Homey Dashboards, suggest the company is focusing on enhancing the functionality and accessibility of its Homey Pro ecosystem.

The teaser may indicate a smaller, more streamlined product that integrates with or complements the Homey Pro. Potential announcements could include:
1. A Miniature Hub: A smaller version of the Homey Pro, possibly designed for simpler setups or secondary locations within a home.
2. Portable or Satellite Devices: Building on features like the “Satellite Mode” of Homey Bridge, they might unveil compact devices to extend smart home coverage for Zigbee, Z-Wave, or other protocols.
3. New Device Categories: With LG’s recent acquisition of Athom, a product that leverages both companies’ expertise could emerge, possibly integrating Homey’s capabilities into LG’s ThinQ ecosystem.

The phrase “big, yet small” might also hint at a device that delivers powerful features in a smaller form factor, aligning with Homey’s goal of keeping operations local and offline while enhancing user automation options. We’ll need to wait until December 18 to confirm, but these possibilities align with their trajectory of innovation.

Looking back at the Youtube video on Homey Dashboards, the video shows that on mobile phone you can swipe through the dashboards. That’s something big, yet small in the Homey Mobile app!

Currently, a dashboard is only displayed if you use the drop-down menu at the top left to navigate to that specific dashboard.

In the video they never swipe through different dashboards, but between columns of the same dashboard. Which is already possible, just open a multi-column dashboard on your phone and swipe away!

Finally revealing a solution to Aqara devices that stop reporting when also using IKEA routers?
A problem that Homey users are facing for years now?

A new Bridge.

Maybe, could be a smaller satellite device for hard to reach devices with IR.

I am pretty sure that this is a hardware update. But it might be a combination of both (like the P1 meter and the energy tab). Anyway, I made a short list of what it could be:

  • homey pro mini or Homey mini (unlikely) : An affordable homey maybe without led ring, z-wave, 433mhz and other features.
  • Homey bridge 2: a new homey bridge with matter (and thread?)
  • Homey bridge infrared: a homey broadlink
  • A speaker for homey pro 2023 (unlikely too)

I hope it’s firmware support for CM5🤞🏻

If it’s new hardware, I hope it’s a “bridge” that can create it’s own networks instead of extending the ones from HP…

Let’s then hope it’s Zigbee implementation is a lot better that the current ones on Homey…
