[SOLVED] Servers / service / connection down? March 11 @ 04:11AM CET

Even when you try logout and login in iOS app ?
Maybe try to open Homey Account, authorize there…does it revive iOS app ?

The topic should quickly clarify the topic.

Sweden. Had outage in the morning, no webaccess, no app access. Some automation did work (lights turned on). No phone notifications that would have been critical for me. No local access - this must be fixed!
No notification on homepage or social media. Tried to call their central phone number, answering machine.
App and web access back for me now. Overall quite disappointed, waiting for official message from Athom.

Logging out and back in seems to fix it.
Didn’t see the option at first, but had to go back a few “pages” before the option was available.

I really don’t understand why Athom doesn’t implement a local web server into the Homey that can be accessed locally.
It would be of great use when/if their servers are down.

Weird, app works on iphone but not on ipad. Same wifi. Update, had to logout and login again, now it works.

During outage, my homey cloud functioned normally, all flows did their job on-time. Only my homey cloud & hp2029 combo was not managable by app or browser

It should not be monitored 24/7. It should work completely independent from any cloud service, as it is advertised - “Everything local”, which turned out was a lie.
When support for our devices ends, we will be left with nice, useless round boxes.

If it will not change quickly, I will return my Homey, as it is not as advertised.

Derbyshire, England

Well after a shower and logging in on the work laptop upstairs I came down to find the Bridge apparently working again.

A couple of flows needed running my awake setting google couldn’t run and the SwitchBot Bot to turn off a light that didn’t appear to run at sunrise. Otherwise it looks okay.

I hadn’t suspected that either

That’s not local

We have the same morning routine

Now there’s a good question.

But the hardware is Raspberry PI based isn’t it ?

So could we replace it with something else ?

Any hardware hackers out there know the answer ?

Yes, Raspberry

For me, i am using self signed certs for other stuff, but else a public cert from a known authority can do
(But i remember some years ago, 1 of them was compromised causing saas outages worldwide)

Fibaro somehow solved this issue and it’s able to run locally. You can generate certificate from administration panel and import in your operating system.
You can also use it without SSL. Locally it’s not a problem.

The day probably did not start well for the Athom infrastructure staff.

It’s good we have the status page and it’s okay for me that there is no statement yet. Likely all hands on deck needed, I don’t think this is a huge shop.

Unfortunately the status page also tells us that similar issues occured yesterday so very much seems like the ops team needs the devs to fix it on a workday. Hope to get a post mortem after that.

I’m very much into running IT infrastructure myself and it took me a moment this morning to add 2+2 together. First did a reboot of my Homey Pro 2023 because I had seen timeouts on the app yesterday as well. Only after the fact found out that the timeouts were related to “server down” from the mothership.

All things that should be working locally basically did but this needs improvement:

  • offline detection for APP dashboard: users need a warning message to tell them that services and notifs are likley not working
  • ideally have local push notifications through Wifi
  • offline detection again: it’s cool and all if local only works for basic tasks but the user absolutely needs to be informed

Overall the fact that this is the first incident of its kind and Homey worked absolutely flawless for me until now should not be forgotten. I’m positive the Athom team will learn from this incident and implements ways to deal with the offline issues.

People using the Heimdall app. how save is that then by no connection with the Homey server.

Yeah, that would be a good intermediate solution (but perhaps a bit too technical for most users).

Before firmware v2, Homey worked without SSL/TLS too, but then Athom got the idea that not using TLS locally is a security issue (?) and they came up with a convoluted way of authenticating and discovery that is the underlying cause of not being able to access Homey locally today :man_shrugging:t3:

It’s not, but Homey isn’t an alarm system anyway.

It’s not, Heimdall is a great product build by a developer I respect a lot, but Homey/Heimdall should not be considered as a serious alarm system. Compared with a professional alarm it lacks among others:

  • Jamming detection
  • Power / connection backup
  • Stability, as seen now with this Homey issue

Not really, but I guess you’re not a long-time Homey user
