My ISP just had some problems in my region so the internet went down.
I now noticed that my flows werent running correctly so I tried opening the Homey app to troubleshoot but I just get a connection error message!
I tried going to my.homey.app and same thing there, it just seems to be loading.
I have connected the Homey Pro (2023) via ethernet and have a static IP for it.
What is going on? The whole point of the Homey is that it runs locally, why doesn’t it work now that the ISP is down?
Help please, I need to be able to control my stuff!!
That’s what Athom wants you to believe, but it simply isn’t true. They assume that every user regularly uses their mobile app, but if you don’t (like many), its authentication token expires and requires an internet connection to be updated.
The website my.homey.app
is not hosted on your Homey at all, but on Athom’s webservers, so you won’t be able to access that at all when your connection goes down.
I use the Homey app on my phone multiple times per day so that shouldnt be a problem. Any advice why it still doesnt work?
It just looks like this when I open the app (i am still connected to the same network as the homey, just without internet access)
Your phone is connected to 5G by the looks of it, so it still tries to reach your homey via the internet. You’re phone should be on the same WiFi network in order for a local connection to be possible in the first place.
I am connected to the same wifi as the Homey, my phone just doesn’t display it when internet is down (it says basically “connected without internet access”)
Please try disabling 5G on your phone and then reopen the Homey app. It’s likely the phone is attempting to connect via 5G because it’s unable to access the internet through your Wi-Fi.
And thus since your phone doesn’t have internet via the Wi-Fi connection it tries to connect via 5G, which isn’t going to work since your home internet is down and the Homey won’t be reachable from outside.
Disabling your cellular connection whilst staying connected via Wi-Fi should if I’m recalling correctly then make a local connection to your Homey.
You are right, disabling mobile data made me able to connect again.
However it doesnt explain why the flows didnt run but I guess they had the same issue as me when i now got back in the mobile app, I simply cannot control my devices, they seem to be “offline” (in this case some tuya wifi devices)
Yes, when the internet is down, Homey won’t be able to control or connect to devices that rely on cloud communication. However, devices that use local protocols like Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Matter/Thread will continue to function.
Oh, so the tuya implementation for the Homey doesnt create a locally controlled environment?
Why not? It should be doable to just implement the tuya cloud on the Homey?
So whats the point of the official Tuya app if it still requires internet connection?
This means that the Homey wont be able to safely control my house when I’m not home (we have a month long trip planned and everything must work by then even if the internet dies on us)
So, what should I do here? Replace all wifi things with zigbee/zwave/matter things? I bought some zigbee plugs but they had other issues (I have a forum post for those issues as well) so im not sure thats gonna work either.
Also, its gonna be costly to replace all like 30 wifi plugs around the house…
Tuya’s APIs operate exclusively via the cloud; they don’t offer local control on the device itself. Their business model is built around selling cloud services to their OEM partners.
When choosing devices, you’ll need to decide between opting for cheaper, cloud-dependent devices—where your personal data may be stored in unknown locations—or investing in devices that operate locally, giving you full control over your data and privacy
Is there any way to access it locally from a browser? Local IP address is a no go with all the restrictions implemented by all the browsers when it comes to SSL certificates but is there a DNS name we can access locally?
Homey Pro is only accessible via the mobile app when your internet is down. Using the Homey Pro via the webbrowser doesn’t work in that situation.
Thanks for confirming @Doekse
I’m very curious where you’ve found that information.
Well, I just assumed since the very first word on the first page on Homey homepage says “EVERYTHING local”…
So, if everything is supposed to work locally, they would have to do some implementation that runs tuya cloud app locally, how else is it going to work?
So yeah, it is misinformation and I bought the Homey based on 2 things:
- I can control all my devices from the same ecosystem and make them control each other through advanced flows.
- It works locally without internet access.
It should state “some select devices work locally, consult the manual” or something rather than “everything…”
Also, now I learn that advanced flows cannot be created/edited offline either since there is no way to access the my.homey.app locally…
So yeah, this kinda sucks tbh.
With a slogan like that, you would assume you could buy a Homey and install it in your cabin in the middle of the wood and start automating things. This is not the case obviously!
I see, Patrick.
When you look at it like that, you got a point there.
Only Athom can tell you why they don’t deliver as advertised.
Yeah I really don’t see what the line “Everything local” could possibly mean other than the ability to use it 100% locally
I didnt see any fine print either, nor could I find any info on this prior to buying.
I was already in a situation where i couldn’ turn on/off my lights if internet went down, that’s a big part as to why i bought into this platform to try and remedy the situation.
Welcome to the club of those who believed the “everything local” fable !
Not to offend you, but why didn’t you do that? Install Homey without any internet connection. It is a good thing to verify your expectations. And to be a little suspicious in terms of commercial expressions.
