Smpl mini display: battery powered e-ink display made for Homey

Thanks for the advice! Can they be empty so fast (1-2 months in use, on for ca 12 hours a day with update interval 15min?
I can try. But it is strange that they are not working fine anymore at the same time.

Hi Ranney.

Batteries should last at least 3-4 months on default settings (1 minute updating). But pairing/re-connecting is the most power intensive operation.

Seems like there’s a lot of activity on your network and potential noise. The lost connection icon (!) is exactly that ‘lost connection’ and is described like this in the online manual:

  • If your smpl mini displayloses connection to your Homey, after a while an exclamation mark (!) icon will appear in the upper right corner of the screen. Lost connection is defined as five repeated unsuccessful attempts.
  • This is most often caused by your Zigbee network and will repair itself shortly after which the display will start updating again and the icon will disappear. The repair cycle is defined as three attempts to connect at 10-minute intervals, after which an attempt is made once an hour.
  • You can also try and force a reconnection by either pressing the back button once or removing the batteries and inserting them again.
  • If your smpl mini displayloses connection and is unable to reconnect itself after countless attempts over a period, the lost connection icon (!) will be replaced by the standard connection screen (‘Please connect the device to your hub’).
  • Sometimes reconnection is smoother if you re-start the smpl app on your Homey. On rare occasions a re-start of your Homey is required.
  • Try to avoid very heavy activity on your Zigbee network as well as very memory intensive tasks on your Homey while your displays are in pause mode to maintain connection.

It also seems like the recent Homey fw updates has had a negative impact on the network? Unless you have made other changes your self?

Have you checked memory/storage status? This could also have an impact on performance.

Please also contact smpl support, so we can monitor the issue.

All good with your displays?
Anything I can do to help?

Dear Nitramevo,

Sorry for my late response. Last week I was a little bit busy (family in hospital).
The smpl screens are still not ‘always working’ as before the nog zigbee update. Still not sure that the exact trigger is. Most of the times it looks like that the trigger is that I have turned it off (away/sleep), but not always. It is also clear now that they can suddenly start working again without any action from my side. Sometimes one if the smpl screens is working and the another one not.
When I open the smpl app, it looks like it is working normally (enabled and on the right screen when an amps screen is not working with an ‘!’ Sign). Any idea what I can do to give you more info? Stil looking for an exact trigger so you can ‘reproduce’ it. But not yet found…
Ps. Thanks for your message and follow up!

@Nitramevo I still encouter that the display wont update but also wont show the exclamation mark.
What is the best solution for this? Sometimes it works fine for a week or more and sometimes it just stops when nothing has changed in the zigbee network

Hi Maurits. Please contact support on the website. They can help you: Device manual - The smpl mini display

It resumed overnight again. So for now no further action. Is there maybe a timeline when we can expect an update maybe for some other templates? :stuck_out_tongue:

Please be aware that the latest experimental fw v rc2 for HP23 is preventing pairing with smpl mini displays. It doesn’t seem to have an effect on already connected displays. We have contacted Athom about this.

We have a fix. A new app version 2.2.7 will re-establish successfull pairing on HP2023 with newest experimental Homey firmware

When restarting the smpl app (2.2.7) on a HP23 (10.1.0) via Android app for Homey, the Homey app on the phone crashes.

I’m running the app version 7.5.2.

:rotating_light: SUPPORT UPDATE: PAIRING ISSUE FIX | FIRMWARE HISTORY | KNOWN ISSUES :rotating_light:

We have had some cases where users have been unable to pair the device with both old and new HP models. Neither Athom nor we can reproduce the issue.

User-tests have proven the case to be a compatibility issue with certain Homey Pro environments due to radio interference.

The users have been able to pair our display with another external Homey Pro or when moving their Homey Pro to another less noisy physical location.

To also account for these cases the team has successfully tested a Zigbee Stack update with a specific focus on improving robustness in case of a noisy and heavy overloaded radio environment.

The Zigbee Stack can be described as the OS (operating system) of the Zigbee chip in a different (deeper) layer than our smpl firmware.
This update has so far proven 100% successful in fixing any pairing issues as well as improving connectivity and stability.

All deliveries since order# 2922 from mid-September have been with the new firmware and Zigbee stack.

Having said this, it is not a general miracle cure in relation to network performance and building a stable and reliable Zigbee network is still essential.

Firmware history:

Order # Version News
Version 1.15 (pre-production)
< 2129 Version 1.18 (final production) graphic adjustments and power optimization
2129 – 2922 Version 1.19 reset function
> 2922 Version 1.19 / Zigbee stack 1.17.2 improving connectivity/minimizing impact of interference

If your display is working fine, as the vast majority, there is no need to update the firmware.

If you want to update anyway, please contact support who can send a guide and the required files. Be aware that the guarantee will be void if you perform the update yourself.

If you have pairing issues, please contact support using the mandatory technical support form.

We are working on a more automated and simple update solution. This will also be handy when releasing firmware updates with new features, optimizations etc.

Other known issues:

  • Although battery level indication will always be an estimate our current on-board algorithm has proven too inaccurate. The batteries can be empty despite the battery level showing 75 or even 100%. If the display is ‘frozen’ and not showing the lost connection icon (an exclamation mark in the upper right corner, as described in the online manual), the batteries are most likely empty. Please also consider the default battery lifetime, which is 3-4 months, depending on your settings (default=1-minute updates). We will evaluate the battery level algorithm in a future firmware release.
  • The on/off device capability including related action cards in Homey Pro 2023 have no functionality and should be disregarded. We are in contact with Athom about this.
  • For Homey Pro 2023 it is possible to see the firmware version under device capabilities. This information is currently not correct for the smpl mini display. We expect this information to be the Zigbee stack version. To get the correct smpl firmware version, please triple click on the device to show the information screen as described in the online manual. Also be aware that the Zigbee stack version is not available on the device information screen. Please refer to the above ‘firmware history’ to understand if your device has the recently updated Zigbee stack.

I have firmware version 1.14 (Pre-pre production? Prototype??)
Never got it working, values are only updated during paring. So it is sleeping in its box, already tried to sell it on Ebay (nobody bought it)
Is a firmware update worth a try?

Thilo

Hi @Thilo.
Your order# is 2092, which means that your display is shipped with fw version 1.18. No customers have received pre-production units with fw v. 1.15.
Why haven’t you contacted our support? You shouldn’t try and sell it on eBay, but let us help you get it to work.
I can guarantee 100% that updating the smpl firmware to version 1.19 and the Zigbee stack to 1.17.2 will wake up your display.
Send me an email on info@smplproducts.com and we will help you.

Well, that is what Homey shows.
I will contact you by mail.

Regards Thilo

As I note in my post, this is not correct. The only way to see the correct smpl firmware version is on-device by clicking three times on the button on the back. And this is only available, when/if the display is paired (!).
BTW: How do you get the device capabilities, if you cannot pair the device to your Homey Pro?

Please contact me and I will help you.

Best regards, Martin…

Hi @Nitramevo ,

I recently purchased two displays and so far very pleased. I am however not able to make a display layout with all the parameters from the app Norwegian Electricity Bill,

The parameters are the ones pertaining to Energy (kWh), and are commonly used by Norwegians user to assess daily, monthly and yearly energy consumption. Pls see attached pictures with the missing parameters marked in red.
