[Request] Web interface

Having the dashboard on the web app would allow more devices to use it. As an example, I was wondering how to show the dashboard on the Amazon Echo Show, that would be possible if you could access the dashboard from the built-in web browser

I am in the process of starting up with Homey dashboard. I think it has a lot of cool functinality.
But, I have a tablet running Android 11 with 2 GB RAM that I use just for displaying the dasboard. Installing the Homey app on this doesn’t work well at all. Many widgets fails.
My theory is that 2GB RAM just isn’t enough and that a web based dashboard is better.
So far I have used HDashboards and their app on this tablet. It has worked well.
Therefore I hope that Homey dashboard will come in a web version :-).

How is this possible with a mac?

If you have an Apple Silicon Mac, you can run the Homey app on it directly, then use Safari to connect to it. Or use the instructions explained here (replace “PC” with “Mac”).

I also strongly recommend to get the dashboards feature available on web browser. E.g. access / consult on computer from friend / work… I hope this will show up shortly. Thanks in advance!

Im in the camp that uses the webapp heavily. But this is just nonsensical hyperbolic speak. Lets be reasonable people.

The homey Pro i actually paid money for is becoming more and more useless to me…No dashboard fom the start and when we get it, no support for Windows. Do you guys expect us to sit with our phones and create advanced flows?
Is that what i should say to my colleagues using HA etc …that homey pro is just becoming a nice blinking pendant

Nope. That’s the exact opposite of what they expect.

Advanced flow is available in the Homey web app. “Only” dashboard and now energy are not

Try explaining that “logic” to new users… :man_shrugging:t3:

Ok you don’t want to put development on the web app but at least create an api that allows us to create something ourselves. It’s bad not being able to control where you want to show your dashboard on. Sure bluestacks exists but it’s so crowded with advertising that you go crazy.

Gonna add my 10 cents of whining.

TL;DR: I do not want a possible fire hazard hanging on my wall.

The app is mostly for phones, a Dashboard on the phone is just silly, it’s not useable unless you do not use it’s potential. Which means the dashboard will not be used while outside the house.

Alas, you need a tablet to get the most out of it. New enough to be able to run the app.

For me, the dashhboard looks perfect to have on a screen on the wall or cupboard in the entrance of the house. Which means I need a tablet there and not basically anything else, like a good old Joggler or Raspberry PI with a touch screen and web browser in kiosk mode. I may not even need touch, and use the dashboard for information only. Any monitor will do then.

Or an old “Smart TV” with a web browser.

Still, my biggest gripe with this is the unavailability of “tablets” without batteries. This means I have to keep a device with a lithium battery on charge 24/7. And even Apple has had issues with batteries catching fire.

Needing something running newish versions of Android or iOS for an application mostly useful for big screens is just failed prioritation. I am pretty sure the dashboard on web would bring the web user percentage way up.

And using the web app is way easier on desiging the dashboard aswell. Just cut&paste of urls, api-keys and moving stuff around is a lot smoother with a mouse and big screen.

Another request for a web interface.

Athom has a golden opportunity to attract disgruntled Smartthings users who are currently utilizing ActionTiles or SharpTools as their dashboard.

As one of those users evaluating options, in my mind, moving to Homey Pro and the jump to Homey dashboards is not worthwhile without a web interface.

Where is the dashboards? I’m using HA and have used several other smart hubs…the others have dashboards. What’s the point of having sensors if you can’t present their data in a nice structured way?

Here I can have 4 x 3 switches on my tablet but only on/off.
No dim, corlor, RSSI is possible.
No list with kWh prices or other values.

You needed more and more extra app for meters, graphics et cetera.

I believe not developing a web-based dashboard represents a significant missed opportunity for the Homey ecosystem. A web interface not only makes it considerably easier to create and customize dashboards, but also unlocks a range of benefits that enhance user experience, like being able to “stream” it to different devices or being used on Amazon Echo show, Tv’s, touchscreen monitors etc.

Was hoping to recreate my Home Assistant dashboards with the Homey dashboards, but unfortunately, that is not possible now, so I will have to keep using Home Assistant for dashboards :sob:

Last few days I tried to make a nice big dashboard for my tablet. Sadly, I was quite disappointed.

  • The app works too slow on my tablet (Samsung A9). Loading dashboards takes way too long (>8sec.) Getting data takes time, but in the meanwhile I can’t swipe between pages. Annoying to wait long for adjusting 1 lamp.

  • It took forever to create a big dashboard, I don’t even want to think of creating it again for an other tablet in the house. Having multiple users in one household, universal layout is needed.

  • Not enough ways to personalize the design. Using html app can solve this, but adds time loading. Apparently it takes time to import a small html file. On a big dashbord I would like to categorize stuff (Lighting, Audio, AV, Moods, Safety, Weather, etc). No way to do that.

  • It’s unclear for me what the differences are between the homescreen or dashboards. And or if its handy to make multiple dashboards and loading between them. Or make 1 massive dashboard with a lot of columns? And why can’t you swipe between dashboards, or have some shortcuts?

Most of the problems wouldn’t be on a webbased dashboard. I understand that time is limited, but I think you can make the difference as Homey to do things differently than others. That was a reason for me buying this system (advanced flows).

I don’t want to look like a salty old man, see it as constructive feedback. Most of Homey is still fantastic! (Besides the Mini spam )

Okay, so it seems there will not be a webversion of the dashboard for a while, although I already have a solution for it, using Home Assistant, most users probably don’t have that setup, and/or might not want to set it up just to have a webversion of dashboards.

As a test for a potential workaround I’ve got Homey dashboards now running on a Raspberry PI (I still had some I wasn’t using), and there are also other ways to set it up on different hardware (this one is just about a Raspberry PI).

Since we need the Homey app to work with dashboards we need to install Android on a Raspberry PI (you can also do this on other devices with other steps, or even run iOS in a virtual environment if you really like a nice challenge).

To run Android on a Raspberry PI, in my case a PI4, you can download a custom version on KonstaKANG.com Select the type of PI you want to use, I suggest a PI4 or PI5 for the latest version of Android, and download the Lineage file, in my case on a PI4, LineageOS 22 - KonstaKANG (Android 15).

After downloading unzip the file and write the IMG file to a SD-Card, just like you would normally do when installing a PI. Insert the SD-Card in the PI and boot it up, it takes a little time to boot, and then go through the configuration steps.

If your screen resolution looks weird or the image moves when you move your mouse etc, try removing the “resolution” file that is on the SD Card on your computer and boot again, the default resolution after removing it will be 1920x1080. Also, you can adjust the resolution to something else after writing the file to the SD Card by editing the resolutions file, and/or make other adjustments in the config file (a bit more advanced and shouldn’t be necessary)

After booting and going through the configuration steps you will notice that there is no Google Play Store, if you want to use that you will have to download and install that.

To install the Google Play Store, have a look at the page where you downloaded the Lineage file, if you scroll down, you will see 2 sections in the FAQ that can be useful:

  • Download MindTheGapps-15.0.0-arm64-xxxxxxxx_xxxxxx.zip
  • Download KonstaKANG-rpi-resize.zip

Since we need these files to be on the PI, you can download them from your PI, or download them on another device and put them on a USB drive and insert that into the PI.

Next up we need to turn advanced restart on, go to settings and search for restart, you will see Advanced restart, open that and select the toggle at the bottom, next to advanced restart.

Now we will reboot the system in recovery mode, so go to restart and you will see “recovery” after you click restart. (make sure you have the 2 downloaded files on your PI or USB first!)

After the system boots into recovery mode, click install, select 1 of the 2 files and click “select another file” and select the other file. then slide the bar to install. After it is installed, click WIPE DALVIK and after that is done click reboot (don’t forget the WIPE step!)

Your system will now boot again in Android and will have the Playstore installed, sign in, download the Homey app and everything should be working.

Although this sounds maybe like quite a lot of work, i installed it all in less than 15 minutes.

If all the above steps look complicated, you might want to watch a video on how to do it, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRFNbLIfFu0

Personally, I have not installed the alternative App Store from this video and skipped the whole Device ID, just follow the steps above and use the video as a reference for more information about the steps.

I hope this will help some of you out with easier configuration of dashboards or to use on your TV screen as a dashboard :+1:

My Homey Pro arrived today, and I was setting it up, testing things, and enjoying my “new toy” when I noticed that the web version doesn’t have a dashboard. That was a huge disappointment, considering that one of the main reasons I bought it was for the advanced flows and the dashboard. I mainly use the web version.

I get your expectations, David.
Athom wrote in this thread: about 20% of all users use the web app.

Which is most probably mainly used for working with advanced flow.
A dashboard is (completely) something else, but it seems they thought adding the dashboard to the mobile app (used by 80% of the users) would be the best way to start.

But for now, you can install the Homey app on a tablet to use the dashboard.
(Which unfortunately might not work when you want to use your “old” devices).
