[Modding] Various Homey Pro (Early 2023) Modification suggestions

ans matter devices?

i also want to do the upgrade but don’t want to do the jailbreak thingy, so what I read here is a easy replace of the cm4 module and your done ?

Seems strange: why would you not want to jailbreak, yet are fine with replacing hardware?

But replacing the CM4 with another module should work, although without a jailbreak Homey will always use 8GB of storage, even if your module has more.

I thought every update you need to jailbreak again

Only if you want to use more than 8GB of storage. If you buy a CM4 for just the additional RAM, you don’t have to jailbreak.

I can always jailbreak in a later stadium if I need space, correct me if I’m wrong.

than im going to do the upgrade my ram is now 1.8gb used on my homey

thanks in advance Robert

It seems my memory is almost full.

Sometimes i even only have 40mb memory left, last week i got a message that there was not enough memory to start an app.

So I am considering updating my CM4 board for a newer one.

Who already done this and how is it working?

We all did it.

Eventhough the mod is well documented, i really would like somebody to help me perform the hardware modding en software afterwards.

Anybody in the Netherlands who did this mod willing to do the steps together with me?

EDIT: Found someone with a background in technical engineering who is going to help me out. New CM4 module is on it’s way.

If you feel it’s too risky to modify the hardware, you can also wait for the Homey Self Hosted Server which will likely soon be released. Probably HomeyLink will also work on there, so you can use the wireless protocols of your Homey Pro and use the LAN and Tools apps on the SHS.

Just did the modification with a 4GB/16GB Compute 4 module (ordered yesterday, received today), it took about an hour caused by the lack of the right tools, but I did it! Now in stead of 300 mb I have over 2GB free. I’ll start expirimenting later if I can change the partitions to ~5GB (or something like that). Costs: 84 Euro including shipping.

BTW: The mobile Apps and webpage are now convinced I’m using the 2026 model! So although it’s a bit disappointing that nothing else on the new Homey has changed, it also means that with only changing the compute module you’re using the latest model available with full support for all new features until 2031.

I am also thinking of modding my HP with a new CM4.

Can you share some recent links to the correct CM4s you guys used? (I am in The Netherlands)

A bit anxious to order the wrong one… :frowning:

The modding topic said CM4108032 with wifi. I ordered it at TME.eu.

same here, i do not seem to find any CM4 module which is on stock and with enoght memory (only 1 or 2GB, which it already have)

So which CM4 module did you exactly get (and where), should it have wifi or is wifi a part of the rest of homey?

Als a backup question, how did you backup, did you use the online backup subscription or did you create a local back and restored that one?! (do you need a local backup or can an online backup also be used to restore?)

I ordered mine @ Reichelt Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 (met wifi, 4GB ram, 16GB opslag) It needs Wifi because the orginal has Wifi as well.

You need to make a local USB backup, so you can restore it after replacing the module. Backup takes about 10 minutes and is quite easy.

Does anyone have experience with how online backup is working when the CM4 is replaced?
Does that keep working and can a “new CM4 backup” be restored to this Homey, when needed?

(So not for the replacement process but afterwards when the modified Homey is back in business…)

Online backup is still working. But I didn’t mess with the partitions yet. I even doubt if I need to do this in the near future, because there’s still 1GB free storage space. My apps are now using 660MB, the swapfile is 1GB, so theoretically I can at least double my apps without getting into trouble.

Thanks @Lacobo.

Anyone tried the online backup after resizing the partitions?

It should work - apps are re-downloaded (those being available and those not installed via CLI), sqlite, insights, rrd are restored only…

Wait, you mean backup after resizing, not restore - yes, this works just fine.
