That’s indeed a misinterpretation

The firmware update of the plug was needed to ensure the energy reporting sustained a power cycle. That issue was not related to the app. I was waiting on INNR to enable firmware updates via their INNR bridge/hub (which they provided me for this purpose, as I have many of those plugs). Since that functionality is still not available, I updated the plugs - like you - using Zigbee2MQTT via a Zigbee dongle.
The app update solved two other issues:

Cumulative power usage (kWh) reported 10x too high; This issue was not present when using the old firmware of the plugs, but emerged when using the latest firmware;

‘Current’ (Ampères) value is 1000x too high, after every restart of Homey, requiring a restart of the INNR app.
So three issues. One firmware related and two app related.
