IKEA Jetstrom ceiling light

I bought an IKEA Jetstrom (Zigbee) light recently and tried to connect it to Homey yesterday without success.

The device is specifically mentioned as supported when you check in the Homey app, so I find this to be a bit of a mystery.

Together with an electrician, we got the light connected to mains power, tried to put it into pairing mode and tried to add it to Homey.

We probably spent an hour trying a bunch of different things, including adding it just using generic Zigbee instead of trying to add it as the specific device.

A few possible reasons that I can think of as to why we were not able to get the light added to Homey:

  1. It’s unlikely, but maybe my electrician didn’t successfully run power to the light. I think this is a long shot, but I will say that we never once saw any light flash, pulse or illuminate at all, so I guess it’s worth considering

  2. One thing we didn’t try was trying to pair the light to Homey while the light was powered, in pairing mode AND within 5cm of the Homey Pro hub. That wouldn’t be easy to do, but that might work if we were able to try that

  3. My most likely guess is that the IKEA light requires an IKEA hub. But that doesn’t make sense either because the light is mentioned as a compatible device in Homey.

I’m at my wits end with this light at this point.

Any ideas?

When you put it in pairing mode, the light should flash. And although I don’t have this particular device, all of my IKEA lights lit up when they were powered initially.

How long are you pressing the reset button for?

I connected the Jetström yesterday successfully.

When you turn on the power, the Jetström should glow fully. After pressing the pair button with a paperclip (2 seconds) , the bulb will start blinking and be paired to Homey.

Thanks @robertklep @Jan_Albert

Based on what you’ve both said, I’m leaning towards perhaps the light was not actually powered at all.

After my electrician connected the light to mains power, at no point did we see any indication that the light was powered on. He warned me not to touch some metal parts while we were tinkering with the light trying to get it into pairing mode, but I didn’t touch anything, so can’t say if it was actually connected to power or not.

Maybe I should have touched the metal to gie myself a shock to check

We tried a single press of the reset button and also a press longer than 10 seconds of the reset button.

But as mentioned above, I never saw any proof that the light was actually powered.

Jan, were you able to connect the light to Homey directly without needing an IKEA hub?

Yes, no hub required.

Thanks Jan.

Ok from what you’ve both said, now it seems most likely that the light was not successfully connected to mains power afterall…

Yes. Setting a device in pairing mode is independent on which hub you use. So, after you put the Jetström in pairing mode, and it is blinking, then it will search for a compatible hub. If it is not blinking there can be two reasons:

  1. No power
  2. Broken device

Thanks Jan.

I’ll gently reach out to my electrician and politely ask him how sure he is that he successfully connected the light to power
