I have the Homey Pro 2023 (running version 12.0.0 of the OS).
It is connected to my mesh network (Netgear Orbi RBR750 with 2 satellites so the entire house has good wifi coverage).
On my Android phone (Samsung S24 with Android 14) I have the latest version of the Homey app (8.3.0)
Many times I can be sitting in my living room, within 10 feet of the Homey, and the app will not connect. I move closer, doesn’t help. I go into the next room (kind of forcing the phone to connect to a different network satellite) and the app will connect. And of course vice versa - in the other room it won’t connect, I move to the main room and it will connect. (These rooms are literally separated by a single 2x4 wall with nothing in the wall).
Similar issues happen when I’m sitting in my office (with a network satellite 1’ away), the phone app will not connect to the Homey.
Once the app connects, I’m able to interact with the Homey, but getting the initial connection has me walking around the house to find the same satellite the Homey is connected to.
How can I fix this issue? Or is this a known issue with the Homey & Mesh networks (although a search didn’t show anyone else complaining about this)
There are plenty of posts from people with the same issue. Usually it’s fixed by configuring the mesh so that Homey’s connections are always handled by the same satellite/mesh point.
Thanks for the heads up, I must have missed those postings. I’ll search again.
BUT, in my opinion, this is a band aid solution. The power of a mesh network is to allow devices to connect seamlessly to any of the satellites without the user knowing or caring. If I have to force the Homey to connect to a specific satellite, that means I need to have my phone connect to that satellite too and that is not allowing me to use the power of the mesh network.
A mesh network should be transparent to its clients, a device connected to satellite A should be able to communicate with a device connected to satellite B without issues. That’s the whole idea of a mesh network.
You just want to prevent Homey from hopping between satellites, which seems to be the underlying issue. Pinning it to a specific satellite hopefully prevents it losing connection.
I’d be surprised if this was a Homey issue. I have a mesh network (from British Telecom) and I’m not seeing any connection issues. Different connection points should be ‘invisible’ to your Homey - that’s the point of mesh.
It might be worth checking whether you have accidentally created two networks (the router and your mesh? a guest network?) - if your phone ‘remembers’ access details for multiple networks it could be hopping between them which could cause the issues you are seeing.
Otherwise, use a network analyser such as NetSpot to see if you can identify an issue. Try wandering around the house to see if your connection changes.
