Help needed for retrofitting a floor lamp with LED lights

Hello Homey Pro Community! I was hoping for some ideas on the best way to retrofit a floor lamp. The sad story begins when we purchased a relatively expensive (for me…) lamp. Due to other things going on, I didn’t get around to testing it out. Once I did, I found that the LED lights that it came with are very high temp (glaring bright white) and are not dimmable. Since it was unreturnable by the time I did this testing, I thought that maybe I could retrofit some dimmable LEDs into it: maybe even some RGBW LEDs that could be controlled through Homey Pro.

That might be doable, but I am stuck… 1st problem is that the wiring access is very tight. The wires must run through the support post and in the back of the fixtures. Looks like about a 6 or 7 mm hole in each of the 3 light backs. Then you also need to get out the bottom of the post which might be even smaller. 2nd problem is picking the right configuration LEDs and controller. There are so many choices that I am stuck.

Any ideas from this esteem group? Any direction you can point me? I really would appreciate the help!

I’m guessing you don’t know your way around a soldering iron

I am replacing the old transformer with a new dimmable one (Zigbee)

I would stick new LED strips along the fixture’s perimeter, disconnect the existing wiring, and hook them up to the new connections.

I don’t use dimmable transformers in my own setup, so I can’t advise on a specific model (perhaps other members will chime in). If it were me, I’d buy it from a physical store so I could return the transformer if it’s not the right fit.

Regarding RGB: I can’t see the voltage of the existing transformer. If it’s 12V or 24V: I would glue the strips around the perimeter, install a controller, connect it to the old wires… I will need 3 controllers

Yes, easy fix is cut the wire of the old transformer (if not connected with a plug ofcourse) and replace.

And cut the wire to the org led-plate and replace with a ledstrip and glue it to the inside…

Not really Homey related imho

Therefore moved to Off-Topic Category

Pls note: WARNING: Electrical Safety is Paramount (Risks: Shock, Fire, Death by electrocution)

It would be a good idea to use the existing wiring - If I end up sticking with a white LED strip, that will work fine.

Any one have suggestions for brands of LEDs and controllers that will have good apps for Homey Pro?

(No problem using a soldering iron, so no limitations there…)

Thanks all.

Carl

You need to decide which direction you want to go. Do you want only white light or do you want RGB?

Take a photo of the transformer. Measure the perimeter of one light fixture.

This is the white color temperature:

Which dimmable transformers are 100% compatible with Homey?

Guess you need a LED driver not just a transformer…
and dimmable LEDs,
best buy it in a set or kit, at least compatible ( according to a shop or vendor) that you don’t have to figure out voltage and current etc…

but there is a lot you can check and choose from according to Gemini Google Search
