Eve Systems Response to Eve Weather Issue on Homey Pro

I’ve been using an Eve Weather device for several months without any issues. Recently the device stopped reporting updated stats to Homey Pro. I attempted all of the usual troubleshooting procedures (see below) to no avail and opened a support ticket with Eve Systems. In response I received the following email that indicates Homey Pro can NOT act as a Thread Border Router. My understanding is that Homey Pro is a full featured Thread Border Router and has been working perfectly with various Matter over Thread devices from several manufacturers. I believe that the issue lies with the Eve Weather device… not Homey Pro. Am I wrong?

Here’s my inquiry to Eve Support and their response:

“Eve Weather Device no longer responds. I am using Homey Pro and the device is paired properly but errors with “Device Unavailable”. I have re-paired the device, rebooted Homey Pro, removed device battery for 10 minutes all to no avail. Re-pairing the device works fine and connection via Thread is established. Homey Pro displays the current stats from the device, but the device fails to update to Homey Pro from that point forward. After a few minutes Homey Pro reports the device as “unavailable”. Restarting the Eve Home app for Homey removes the “Device Unavailable” error but no updates of temperature and humidity are received. The stats on the device itself change appropriately but those changes are not reported to Homey Pro. I have repeated all of these steps several times over several days with the same results.”

Eve Systems Response:

“From the information provided, the issue is very likely caused by the Homey Pro not being a Thread Border Router. Eve devices that use Matter over Thread require a Thread-capable hub to maintain continuous communication and report updates.

According to our hub compatibility list, a Homey Pro cannot act as a Thread Border Router:

This is why:
• Initial pairing works (Thread join can be attempted), but continuous updates fail.
• Device stats change locally, but Homey Pro does not receive updates.
• Reboots and resets temporarily remove “Device Unavailable” messages, but the underlying Thread connection is not supported.

Without a compatible Thread hub, the device will not reliably report data or remain available in the system.”

Hi Bob,

since today I am having the same problem. My eve weather was working totally fine since I set up the connection between eve weather and my homey pro mini couple of weeks ago. But now it always loses connection after a couple of minutes when I re-pair the devices. Did you figure out how to fix that?

My Eve Weather device started working again a few weeks after the initial issue began. I have no idea why but all is well now. Well, almost all…. The Eve Weather device now repeatedly reports that the battery charge has fallen to 0%. The battery tests OK with normal voltage and the device continues to report temperature and humidity values just fine. My device is outdoors, so this may be an ambient temperature issue. Still, it should not happen. After a few hours or a few days the battery once again reports with actual %. But I soon receive another notification that the battery charge has fallen to 0%.

It seems that both of these issues can be attributed to the device rather than Homey. For now, mine hasn’t disconnected, is reporting proper temperature and humidity values. I will just tolerate the occasional battery failure notifications.
