Connect Eve light switch to Homey Pro

I got one of the Eve light switches, even recommended on this site, but I don’t see how to connect it to the homey pro. It’s thread, but not matter. Anyone have setup instructions for the Eve light switch?

Looks like homey only supports thread over matter, so the Eve light switch won’t connect. Are there multiple eve light switches? The ones in the EU different from the US ones?

I can’t get my head around the best buy guide recommending Thread only devices

This kb article says clearly you cannot use Thread only devices with Homey. But clearly we’re missing something

The “Best Buy Guide” is clearly wrong. Frustrating.

Well, I don’t know if we missed a piece of info or anything.

@Doekse Sorry to bother you, but do you have information on how to pair a Thread only best buy device with the Pro 2023?

Documentation says No

It seems that we have indeed made a mistake here. The Eve Light Switch is Thread only, it doesn’t support Matter over Thread. Homey Pro (at this time) only supports Matter over Thread.

Sorry for the inconvenience, we’ll update the article accordingly.

Ah, I see. Thanks 4 quick reply!
I’ve seen other devices with the Thread logo as well btw

Thanks for the warning! I have just checked and it looks like two Onvis units are also on the list. I’ve passed on the feedback internally

Even for us, Matter and Thread can be a bit confusing at times

To go back to the first question, our confusion came from this page on the CSA website. It states that an Eve Light Switch should be Matter compatible, but it doesn’t seem to be the one we’re linking to.

I’ve asked the Eve team for clarification.

I have both the Eve light switch and the Radiator values with I would like to connect to Homey.

Both are on the CSE website and indicated as Matter device.

Did you get any response from the Even team on this matter?

Eve launched a new Light Switch that’s Matter enabled, the ‘old’ one will remain Homekit only.

For Eve Thermo a Matter update hasn’t been announced (yet) unfortunately.

Matter is the protocol standard. This standard is applied to either Thread or WiFi. All Matter devices are either “Matter over Thread” or “Matter over WiFi”. Thread is low energy and so easier on batteries.

Matter basically the rules to how things are supposed to communicate. Thread or WiFi is the actual radio. So Matter is like the FAA, Thread is the pilot. The FAA does not fly the airplane.

Bluetooth is in the Matter’s initial device connection. This is used to to exchange encryption keys annd other initial configurations. Once initialized Thread or WiFi takes over. The assumption was that cell phones or tablets would be available bro do this but this deadline was missed so Anton/Home Assistent/SmartThings… needed to improvise. Homey Pro quick solution was to use the onboard BlueTooth but this isn’t perfect because Bluetooth has a limited range. It seems the cell phone industry has come come through. But still organizing one company is hard. Organizing device, smart hub, and cell phone companies to all comply to matter is harder.

There are no driver apps for Matter devices to install. This is All off this is mitigated by the Matter standard. Getting a standard that will work for all types of devices isn’t easy. If you are old enough to remember early printers. In those days one had to be sure to buy a printers compatible with software you wanted to connect use. But then came times when neither software A and B would work with one printer. Yeah, this was a pain in the…

I’m not sure how this story is relevant to this thread?

My Home Assistant server has no Bluetooth, and yet I’ve been able to pair Thread devices just fine, using my mobile phone. No “improvisation”, this is how it was intended to be used.

Homey has always provided two methods for pairing Thread devices: using its own Bluetooth radio, or using the one in your mobile phone.

I successfully paired to the Eve wall light switch. Initially I was not able to par but easily paired on my second attempt. I’d thought I share how this worked for me incase other are having issues…

Initially I installed the switch in the laundry room at the other end of the house. Keep in mind this devices initially uses bluetooth in the pairing process. I tried the homey matter pairing but at 50 feet from homey and got nowhere. I then tried using the Android/iPhone alternate method but this failed.

It was annoying to pull the switch out and temporarily power the switch using an old extension cord, them powered up th3 switch in the same room as Homey. I suppose I could ha instead brought homey to the switch but I figure this could be messy on the mesh. After powering up the switch in the same room as Homey pro I easily paired using the Homey method. After pairing reinstalling the switch in the laundry room works.

So it seems somewhere in the iPhone pairing process did not work for me. I only have the homey Pro, no apple home hub so perhaps this is why? I’m not sure.

The switch is good quality. I has a nice touch on/off button (no moving rocker). I would rather it was direct wired than pigtails makes all the wires bulkier in the box.
