It’s great to see Homey featured in the marketing for Aqara’s new product.
However, it would be more convenient if all new devices, especially those that use Matter, were compatible with Homey. Currently, the W600, W100, and smoke detectors are not compatible with Homey unless you use a M3 Hub and add it to Homey using Matter.
The W600 uses Thread. Homey supports Thread. Why wouldn’t they be compatible with Homey (other than Homey not supporting their features, but that won’t be fixed by adding a hub in between)?
I’ve been giving Aqara quite a bit of feedback about their marketing, because it can be pretty confusing. I do like seeing the logo on the box or on their website, but only when the device actually works out of the box.
Aqara labels some of their pure Zigbee devices as “Homey compatible” because, in theory, you can connect them to an Aqara hub, use that hub as a Matter Bridge, and then link them to Homey through Matter.
For their Matter-over-Thread and Zigbee multiprotocol devices, they will work with Homey Pro (Early 2023) and Homey Pro mini out of the box via Matter. For Zigbee however, you need to connect the device to an Aqara hub first, switch it over to Zigbee mode, and then pair it with Homey
Imagine that, marketing speak that isn’t entirely truthful (like saying that Homey supports Zigbee while it misses a lot of basic functionality, or saying it supports Matter 1.3 while it’s only partially implemented ).
I bought the Aqara W600 thinking it would just work out of the box. I also had issues with the Matter connection. Only after switching to Zigbee and back to Matter did it work, but then not with Homey. It worked in HomeKit via the HomePods as Thread routers.
After some digging, I managed to find the Zigbee specifications and developed my own Homey app that actually works pretty well. I even got some extra features like display flip and child lock working.
One thing worth noting: you don’t actually need an Aqara Hub. I connected directly via Bluetooth using the Aqara app and simply switched the device to Zigbee mode from there.
I’ve submitted the Homey app for review, but approval can take up to 14 days. Since this is my first submission, I’m hoping it goes through quickly. I’ll update once it’s available.
