Ability to use Homey Pro in Bridge mode

As there is no way to upgrade a Homey Pro. When you outgrow it’s resources (memory & storage for example) the logical solution is to migrate to Homey Self Hosted Server. But rather than relegate your investment in the Pro device to e-waste, it would be really beneficial if you could convert it to a Homey Bridge and continue to take advantage of its excellent radios from SHS to manage your home. This would make Homey a more scalable solution.

You can use HomeyLink, though it does require you to run the Zigbee/Z-Wave/433/IR/BLE apps that you want to use on the Homey Pro. You can keep LAN/Cloud/Tools apps on the SHS in that case.

Yes, I am fully aware of the Homey Link app, and I have already considered that. But as you mention you still have to run all your apps that use the Homey radios on the Homey Pro, so defeats the purpose of my suggestion, as it doesn’t truly improve the scalability of Homey.

Yeah, HomeyLink feels a bit half-baked. Unfortunately Athom have dismissed the idea of turning Pros into Bridges so unless they do a 180-degree turn it won’t happen. That said, Athom has made several “course corrections” over time so who knows.

Maybe if enough people want such functionality they might consider it. That was my hope of posting this suggestion, as it would allow users setups to grow and stay loyal to the Homey ecosystem.

I hear you, but looking at the introduction of all new Homey models, there’s little evidence to be found Athom is even thinking in ways of “upgrading/migrating”, or ways to make Homey models act in multiple configurations.
Homey Bridge is a bit of the exception to that, only it’s not a controller, it’s “just” an antenna-as-extension.

  • Homey Cloud: no way to upgrade/migrate to other models
  • Homey 2016-2019: at first there wasn’t any migration tool for the Pro 2023; then a number of (forum) users requested it, which made Athom consider it and they published it in the end
  • Homey 202x: there’s no migration tool by Athom to Homey SHS (there is a community created tool however)
  • I’m pretty sure HomeyLink is published as “the universal glue tool”, to create any configuration you like with multiple Homeys
  • -,Downside indeed is you’ll need to install & maintain apps & firmware on all Homey-as-extension models used for Homey SHS & Homey Next-Models

Homey SHS is also presented as DIY Homey for “geeks”, it’s not a successor of the Pro models

It’s most unfortunate they don’t see the value in providing ways for users to scale their set-up as their home automations grow over time. Whether that be migration tools, or ways to re-use existing Homey hardware with SHS or newer and hopefully more powerful models in the future.
There are times I wonder if I bought in to the right ecosystem, having only had my Pro 2026 with Ethernet dongle and Bridge for a short few months, and it’s already starting to struggle. But that’s quite a big investment.

Isn’t that true for all self built home automation, regardless of the platform (I’m of course referring to the YT channel Hibbert Home Tech and every time he mentions HA he says his virginity grew back    )
