Xiaomi gateway cannot be added?

I just have my new Homey after my Domoticz setup crashed beyond repair. Most of my home automation uses the Xiaomi gateway. I did see pretty much all my devices being supported by Homey, so that’s why i chose Homey as my new brainsof the house. But now that I want to add the Xiaomiand Aqara gateway devices I get a message to first add the Xiaomi gateway to the Homey setup. But… I don’t see any option to add the gateway! Which means that most of my devices cannot be connected to Homey?

Help??

You likely need to add it in More->Settings->Xiaomi Mi Home in the Homey app

And with gateway you probably mean this one (1st gen, Zigbee+BLE) right?

Yes, it’s a first gen, WiFi gateway. I just see a v2 gateway in Homey, but it requires a token, which is don’t have! I chose Homey to nit have any technical hassle:/ so far it’s not going great…

They should be supported according to the app store page.

There are also instructions for obtaining the token (AFAIK you needed to press a hidden/white area in the Xiaomi Home mobile app several times)

For Xiaomi it’s a bit different indeed, as the App page already mentions:

Xiaomi does not officially support controlling devices from outside the Mi Home app. Additional steps are required for pairing these devices with Homey that require some technical knowledge. It also means not all available devices are supported. Also be aware that Xiaomi can make changes to it’s eco system at any time resulting in Homey not being able to control these devices anymore.

Please visit the support topic for supported devices, installation instructions and further details.

In the history of the Community Forum topic, i’ve found references to these pages for installation instructions:

Pairing miIO devices

For Homey to be able to communicate with devices over the miIO protocol a unique device token needs to be obtained. In some cases technical knowledge is needed for retrieving these tokens. See the instructions here on retrieving device tokens or here - YouTube and here for which driver to pair your device with.

Edit: Welcome to Homey by the way  :waving_hand:

Thanks for the welcome. So far it’s not smooth sailing…

Finally did get the gateway added, but that’s it! Can now control the little light on the gateway itself. yaay!! Nothing else.

Nothing works :frowning:

Which Xiaomi devices do you have? You might be able to get them in Homey via Google Home automations. Create a virtual device in Homey using the Virtual devices app on Homey. Make sure to choose the device type “Kettle”, since only those are supported in Google Home (I don’t know why, but that’s the only virtual device allowed on Google Home). Then, in the Google Home mobile app, link both the Homey and Xiaomi Home services. You then need to create a automations in Google Home. Example for a smart plug:
When: Xiaomi device turns on
Then: Turn on virtual device
When: Xiaomi device turns off
Then: Turn off virtual device
When: Virtual device turns on
Then: Turn on Xiaomi device
When: Virtual device turns off
Then: Turn off Xiaomi device

You then have a bidirectional sync between the devices.

One of the big reasons of choosing Homey was to get rid of Google controlling everything in my life

I’m honestly seriously considering just returning the Homey to the store… I cannot get it to work. Already trying for hours now… I bought a really expensive device to NOT be struggling with all sort of technical nonsense… Yet here I am, wasting hours with tokens, weird applications and still not getting anything to work… Flashback to 8 years ago when I made my own home automation from scratch on a raspberry pi… Took me months to get it up and running, and cost me 50 bucks on a raspberry pi! Now I spent over 400 bucks on a device, not planning to once again spend months to get stuff to work!

I use Google home/voice control as my primary control method for all of my Homey devices, but if Google is an issue for you, then I think there’s no other option to control your Xiaomi devices since AFAIK Xiaomi doesn’t offer an API

If Xiaomi is a great part of your home automation, than i totally i understand that decision.

Seems to be.
Great!! What a massive disappointment. I really expected a lot of Homey tbh, certainly for the steep price. But what a disaster.

I’d say 80% of my home automation is Xiaomi yea… It’s honestly insane that Homey does not work with that out of the box. It’s one of the biggest players in home automation out there. And no, it’s not because of Xiaomi! They offer third party control, which works perfectly fine with fi. Domoticz and Home Assistant. No issues there at all… But I wanted to have a more mature ecosystem that would make things easier… Instead I got a ridiculously expensive device that makes it more difficult, and seemingly impossible…

Yeah, I’m frustrated af! :frowning:

Okay… still here!

It is working… somewhat.
(fck, I am still an IT-guy… haha. Can’t stand it if something doesn’t work).

For anyone interested:
You need to add the gateway using a token and IP-address within the Xiaomi-app (within Homey) itself. I previously had it added as a device. While that does work to control the gateway itself, it doesn’t do anything else (so kind of a useless feature tbh)…

N.b. There’s multiple Linux and Windows applications that can help you get the IP and tokens. Try them all! For me one didn’t work, another did…

The good thing: Most of my Xiaomi sensors now work!! (unfortunately not all - they’re different generation sensors - not entirely sure why some work and others don’t). The luminosity cannot be read though - it always seems to stay at 8 lx for some reason. One challenge was that you only get the id of the sensor and not the name you’ve given it in the Mi Home ecosystem - so it takes some trial and error to figure out which sensor is which one!

The bad thing: All my Xiaomi power plugs do work in Homey, however they’re extremely unreliable - so, honestly, they don’t really work at all :frowning: Going to try and replace them with IKEA power plugs. If that solves it I’m happy as these are cheap af!

My personal conclusion: Gonna stick with Homey at least a bit longer… I was after all already planning on replacing most of my old Xiaomi and Yeelight gear at some point with probably newer generation Xiaomi gear (which should work on Homey directly, without the need of the Xiaomi Gateway) and the lights with Philips Hue (hella expensive, but more options and less power consumption). Thing is, I do not like waste, so I’m waiting for gear to break down and both Xiaomi and Yeelight are very durable - they just don’t ever break down! :stuck_out_tongue: Some of my gear is now probably around 10 years old and still going strong. Now that is quality, ngl!

Either way, thx for the help @smarthomesven and @Anoniemand

Make sure to get the TRETAKT or INSPELNING, these use Zigbee and are far more reliable than the new Matter smart plugs.

thanks again. I am however still surprised so many devices just don’t work well with Homey. With my ancient Domoticz set-up that hadn’t been updated for a century pretty much everything always just worked…
