Smpl mini display: battery powered e-ink display made for Homey

Hi @MarcoRuiter
All we can do at the moment is wait for Athom. I do a weekly follow-up to avoid being too annoying. And most recently today. I haven’t heard anything back yet.
What you can do to help, is to make a ticket/contact Athom support about when they expect to fix HP2023 and smpl mini display integration.
Sorry, that I can’t give a more precise answer.

Is the homey problem related to the zigbee problem they have with the new chip? I also have other battery zigbee devices that does not work, and the developer of that app also states that homey need to fix their software.

I don’t know. The smpl mini display is a bit more complicated than a standard zigbee device and requires a more completed zigbee implementation on the hub side.

Did you hear anything back from athom? Is a solution close?

I follow up on a regular basis and the feedback is ‘soon’.

Still no news from athom ?

Yes, good news:

Just wanted to let you know that we are currently testing a Homey Pro (Early 2023) update internally that seems to resolve your issue with regard to reading attibutes, see attached screenshots.
Will let you know when this is available for you to test.

So ‘soon’ is now ‘very soon’ :pray:t2::crossed_fingers:t2::four_leaf_clover:

Ahh is that the rc 112 version that’s alpha channel ? Then I can test it also

No. We are still waiting for the test.

Ah that’s in the changelog of my latest firmware so will test this weekend. And there is no screenshot attached to which you are referring

@MarcoRuiter Did it work? :slight_smile:

Is there any way we can pressure Athom to fix this issue or at least let us know when a fix is in place?

…and how soon is “soon” actually?

@ECKEROTH @Thilo

They are working on it.
Athom are never communicating specific delivery dates.
I guess it is wise considering that software development and system integration is a very dynamic area of expertise and hard to estimate.
They want to avoid to over-promise and under-deliver. And then it is easier to communicate more vaguely like ‘soon’ and ‘very soon’.

Having said this, they did tell us last week that they expect a release to start rolling out to private alpha channels (our developer).
So, the first thing that will happen is that our Homey developer will test the fix.
If for some reason it requires an adjustment of the smpl Homey app, then he will be able to make this before the fix is released to everyone.
It could also be, that Athom have made a mistake/missed something in the test-release and he can guide them for amendments.

There is no doubt that this will soon be fixed.
But you are right, that it is the definition of ‘soon’ which is uncertain.

Finally! smpl x HP2023 is compatible…[read more]

I am very happy to announce that the firmware fix from Athom is now only days away.

We received an update for test Thursday last week. After thorough testing Friday we only found minor issues which have been reported to Athom. But the overall functionality is now working as expected and all known compatibility issues have been solved.

In short, the smpl mini display is now working on the new Homey Pro 2023.

We expect an experimental (beta) firmware release from Athom together with other Zigbee improvements in the coming days. Watch out on: Homey Pro (Early 2023) Changelog | Homey and other official Homey channels.

We will also release a new version of the smpl Homey app which will be required for full compatibility with the new Homey mobile app etc.

Why has it taken so long?

  • The new Homey Pro 2023 is still early release. We were waiting in line together with everyone else to receive the new hardware and it then had to be shipped to our hardware team in Ukraine.
  • First, we couldn’t connect at all. After extensive testing, we could ascertain that the issue was on Homey side. This was reported to Athom, who released a successful fix after a while. The fix required an update of the entire Zigbee stack from the chip manufacturer.
  • Second, we realized that it wasn’t possible to update the display despite being connected to Homey. Additional testing proved once again that it was on Homey side. It took a while for Athom to identify the problem. And additional time to figure out a solution. The problem was caused by the smpl mini displays unique use of ZCL commands and thus different layers of the Zigbee architecture, which is why a Zigbee bug wasn’t discovered by Athom. This is now fixed.
  • Finally, all updates must go through strict testing procedures from alpha through experimental (beta) to stable. And new releases are often dependent on, as well as bundled with, other fixes.

Big thx to Athom to prioritize fixes although we are a small fish. And to our awesome developer @Koktail for a great assist.

And thank you all very much for your trust in us and for being patient.

Many thanks again for all the hard work!
I’ve now removed the smpl device from homey, installed the app (2.2.1) and updated homey to RC 122. After re-adding the device it is still not working. Any idea what is wrong or is this not yet the homey update we are waiting for? Thanks for help!

The firmware that fixes the issue is v10.0.0-rc.130 and not available for test yet.

Not RC 122. The fw fix isn’t yet released, but will be in a matter of days.
The release will include specific Zigbee improvements and state very clearly re. smpl mini display.
I will also announce here in forum when everything is ready.

More good news!

Athom just released the long-awaited firmware update (v10.0.0-rc.133): Homey Pro (Early 2023) Changelog | Homey

And our developer Leendert de Kok (@Koktail ) also released a new test-version (v.2.2.2) of the smpl Homey app, which is required for HP2023: smpl App til Homey | Homey

Please share your experience with us.
And once again thank you for your support.

Simply put / Martin…
