Finally! smpl x HP2023 is compatible…[read more]
I am very happy to announce that the firmware fix from Athom is now only days away.
We received an update for test Thursday last week. After thorough testing Friday we only found minor issues which have been reported to Athom. But the overall functionality is now working as expected and all known compatibility issues have been solved.
In short, the smpl mini display is now working on the new Homey Pro 2023.
We expect an experimental (beta) firmware release from Athom together with other Zigbee improvements in the coming days. Watch out on: Homey Pro (Early 2023) Changelog | Homey and other official Homey channels.
We will also release a new version of the smpl Homey app which will be required for full compatibility with the new Homey mobile app etc.
Why has it taken so long?
- The new Homey Pro 2023 is still early release. We were waiting in line together with everyone else to receive the new hardware and it then had to be shipped to our hardware team in Ukraine.
- First, we couldn’t connect at all. After extensive testing, we could ascertain that the issue was on Homey side. This was reported to Athom, who released a successful fix after a while. The fix required an update of the entire Zigbee stack from the chip manufacturer.
- Second, we realized that it wasn’t possible to update the display despite being connected to Homey. Additional testing proved once again that it was on Homey side. It took a while for Athom to identify the problem. And additional time to figure out a solution. The problem was caused by the smpl mini displays unique use of ZCL commands and thus different layers of the Zigbee architecture, which is why a Zigbee bug wasn’t discovered by Athom. This is now fixed.
- Finally, all updates must go through strict testing procedures from alpha through experimental (beta) to stable. And new releases are often dependent on, as well as bundled with, other fixes.
Big thx to Athom to prioritize fixes although we are a small fish. And to our awesome developer @Koktail for a great assist.
And thank you all very much for your trust in us and for being patient.
