Just a thought, but wouldn’t Homey Pro and Bridge devices be excellent candidates for PoE power and data. And why is the Bridge still powered by micro USB, when all USB devices in the EU are meant to be USB C?
Also, with the growing support for 4K home security cameras, and the Pro being based on a Raspberry Pi Compute Module that is gigabit Ethernet capable, shouldn’t it be possible to support full gigabit networking on the Pro. As well as PoE.
It feels like SHS users seem to forget the original intended purpose for the Homey Bridge. It was originally released as a cheap antenna for Homey Cloud. So the Homey Cloud users can get started with/test Homey and the price is only €69 so not much to lose if they didn’t like it. It wasn’t meant to build a too extensive smart home setup with, since every command and status update of course has to be transferred to Homey Cloud (which means that the ESP32 should receive commands from the cloud and forward them to the device via its antenna), and you’ll simply reach that device limit pretty quickly, especially with energy monitoring smart plugs. However, since most Homey Cloud users are starting with smart home and don’t have many devices yet, most didn’t notice the limits.
When the new SHS got released, Athom decided to re-use the Bridge hardware as the antenna for SHS as well, which is of course very limited and SHS users probably have a way bigger Zigbee/Z-Wave setup than the average Homey Cloud user. This meant that most SHS users reached the limits of the bridge more quickly.
IMO Athom should create a more expensive “Bridge Pro” for SHS users (and advanced Homey Cloud users) with the improved Zigbee chip of the Pro2023 and maybe a better CPU and NIC for faster processing of commands (and PoE can also be a feature on the Bridge Pro, though I’ve never seen that on consumer products) and keep the older (cheaper) regular Homey Bridge for Homey Cloud users.
I do wish the Bridge was PoE. Then again I do wish most products have PoE and drives me nuts but most also don’t have a networking setup in their house…
I was surprised to see that the Bridge was not USB-C due the EU law. I assume that they are going through stock and there will be a refresh when the warehouse is clear.
Yes I support the PoE idea. The Pro is arriving soon and was looking for cleaner cable setup with a (AliExpress) PoE usb c adapter. But the official adapter is still cheapens of course supported.
A full Gbps PoE LAN poort would make better use of the home setup of most enthusiast.
I’m fairly sure the target audience of the Bridge used only ISP routers or the TP-Link, Netgear, etc. that you can buy at any electronics store.
But when SHS got released, the more tech savvy users also bought the Bridge who had more extensive networking setups. When the Bridge was released in 2021, its only purpose was as a cheap antenna for the free Homey Cloud.
Besides that, why would they add/use PoE (which is very uncommon in homes) instead of just using USB (everyone has a USB adapter/cable, even the less tech savvy users)? AFAIK you can also use a PoE to USB adapter as well if you really need it.
I’ve been powering my homey pro 2023 for a little over 1,5 years now with PoE using the Ubuiquity PoE to USB-C adapter (UACC-Adapter-PoE-USBC), and works just fine for ethernet and power (without any power warning).
So maybe not build in, but it works on full GbE, though not sure why you would need full GbE, as theres not that much of information going over the network cable, Homey can’t transcode video etc.
Since the camera feeds conversion to WebRTC for browser support, my Homey Pro has been consistently one of the higher network bandwidth users on my LAN. Only beaten by things like my NAS, NVR and desktop computer unsurprisingly.
The official LAN adaptor is a gigabit Ethernet interface, but is restricted in bandwidth to I believe 480Mbps by the USB port it connects to. Which would be the same for any LAN adaptor, which is disappointing. It is a real shame the official adaptor doesn’t support PoE. But I will look in to the Ubiquity adaptor (even if I’m a team Omada network ha ha).
Yeah you could use one of those PoE adapters, I use one for the Hue bridge (which again I wish was PoE ). I agree that the role of the Bridge has changed over time as Homey has evolved too. I got one for RF and IR needs but then read the learning part had been dropped. Opps my bad. Lucky I had a couple of my devices in list.
I too was hoping to be able to use the RF and IR functionality to learn commands from dumb remotes, and was disappointed the learning feature was dropped.
My BroadLink RM4 Pro came to the rescue, as learning on that works great, and there is a Homey app to integrate it. But it is a bit daft you have to have a third party device to do what the Homey Pro and Bridge are capable of doing natively
