Ikea GRILLPLATS for monitoring of high consumers

Hi,

I was wondering if any of you has experience with monitoring power consumption of large home appliances like tumble dryer and washing machines.

Is the new IKEA GRILLPLATS safe for this application? I understand the max consumption of this device is high enough (around 3680W) to cover the appliance consumption. However the motor consumption supported by GRILLPLATS is 300W and both the tumble dryer and the washing machine (when in centrifuge mode) consume over 300W.

My plan is to use them only for monitoring not on/off control.

Is there any other sensing device recommendation? What do you use?

I’m using one of these for my washing machine: SILVERCREST® Stopcontact-tussenstekker | Lidl (Matter over WiFi, I’m not using it with Homey but I assume it’s supported).

It doesn’t have a stated inductive (motor) limit, only an overall limit (16A, 3680W). I’m also not using it to switch, just for monitoring, and it seems to be able to handle that task just fine.

I’d be careful with that assumption. These are Tuya-based devices, and Tuya did use some custom Matter clusters for their power consumption capabilities, especially in the beginning.

But you can still use the regular Tuya app, right?

So it’s still compatible with Homey, just not via Matter.

You moet likely can, but there are a lot of other options I would recommend before going that route.

The IKEA plugs are a great option but I personally also have great experiences with either the frient Zigbee plugs or the Matter enabled Meross smart plugs.

I have good experiences with the ThirdReality smart plug connected via a ThirdReality Hub Gen2 plus. The energy readings update every 10 seconds. The smart plug has 16A rating. The Hub connects to a standard USB port or charger.

I also really like the Kasa HS110’s, they’re very good build quality and work well with the official Kasa app, but unfortunately they’re no longer sold.

The Tapo P110 plugs are also working great via the official Tapo app, but not all Tapo plugs support 16A loads and not all of them are supported by Homey so you should check the App Store page before buying. For example, P110 is supported but the P110M isn’t. Also the new outdoor plug isn’t supported either.

I’m sure you’re right (although I can’t find any reference to Tuya for them), but they worked out of the box on Home Assistant so there’s no reason Homey couldn’t support them.

They mention that the plugs work with the “Lidl Home” app, which is a Tuya based app

Yeah I found the offending cluster too:

But like I said, it works fine in HA so there’s no reason why Homey cannot support it either.
