Zigbee devices should be paired with Homey as close as possible to the location where you want to place the sensor. So, generally, that would not be next to your homey.
Since the communication range of Zigbee devices is limited (a few meters max.) for longer distances you need intermediate ‘router’ devices. Typically those are mains powered Zigbee devices, like smart plugs. Together they form a mesh network.
You would pair those router devices first to Homey, and then the battery powered devices, like the Aqara sensors. As battery powered devices normally cannot act as a router. So it is all about creating a good Zigbee mesh network.
Not sure what kind of devices you have and how you have them set up.
Yeah only battery powered T1 aqara sensors. And the distance from the furthest device is 10 meter or so. But it did work stable until the latest update.
I think the only way to find out if and what Athom changed that relates to the Zigbee range, is to ask them directly (via Support | Homey).
Could it be that something changed in your environment that causes interference with your Zigbee network? Like a change in your or your neighbor’s WiFi 2.4 GHz network. Both communicate on the same frequency and can interfere. This also has an effect on the range of Zigbee devices. Worst case it completely makes Zigbee communication impossible.
Not sure whether you have a Zigbee smart plug that you could place in between your Homey and the furthest Aqara sensor.
Hi thanks for your explanation! Didn’t change anything with the WiFi and don’t have neighbors very close. I just ordered a range extender from Robbshop. Let’s see if that helps.

After you connect the Zigbee router device to Homey, make sure to repair the relevant Aqara sensors (via the Maintenance > Try to repair option in their device tile). This forces them to find a new route. Aqara devices tend to be very particular in auto re-establishing new routes, so you need to force them via the repair step.
i had firmware 13.2.2. update today on my Homey Pro (Early 2019) and now all my zigbee devices are gone.
Zigbee is not even showing a firmware or anything. looks like the controller is not even found anymore.
I have reported this to Homey support and got response today which helped. a full firmware install fixed my issues.
Should someone have the same, this is what i got that fixed it:
Go to Homey Developer Tools and select “RESTART IN RECOVERY MODE”
- When Homey enters the Recovery Mode, please open the Homey mobile app and tap on your Avatar (top right),
Tap “My Homeys”, and select “Add new Homey” to add a new Homey Pro.
- Connect your Homey app to HomeySetup-XXXXXX and then to your own WiFi network.
After checking for updates, please select “No” if you are prompted to restore a back-up.
(Only for Homey Pro users who have an active back-up subscription)
The “Options” will become available after this. Tap “Options” and select “Download full software update” to re-install Homey’s latest firmware.
- When this process is done, please check if your Zigbee issue still persists.
