Current State of Matter in Homey: Overview of what's supported, compared to the full Matter spec

Since this keeps coming up in the forums I though I create this post that I will update on major Homey/Matter releases to document the current state of Matter in Homey.

Current State as of 22. October 2026

I compared the Matter code in Homey 13.5.3 with the official Matter data model for every spec version from 1.0 to 1.6.1 (the device type and cluster definitions in the open-source Matter SDK, connectedhomeip).

This is based on reading the code, not on testing devices. “Supported” means Homey has code that turns that part of Matter into Homey capabilities, settings or flow cards. Individual devices can still behave differently.

TL;DR

  • Up to Matter 1.4.2, Homey covers nearly everything. 52 of the 53 device types a hub is meant to control work in some form, 42 of them fully.
  • Matter 1.5 is about half covered. Of its 16 new device types, 6 are fully supported (Chime, Doorbell, Soil Sensor and three electricity meter types), 2 partly, and 8 not at all: cameras, video doorbells, intercoms, the new closures (gates, garage doors) and energy tariffs.
  • Matter 1.6 adds no new device types, only three clusters, and none of them are supported yet.
  • Against the full 1.6 standard: 48 of 69 device types are fully supported (70%), 12 partly (17%) and 9 not at all (13%). Homey implements 62 of the 99 application clusters (63%).
  • Inside the supported device types, sensors, buttons, lights and appliances are nearly complete. Thermostats, door locks, EV chargers and media players only get the basics.

Support per Matter version

Each version includes everything from the versions before it.

Matter version Device types¹ :white_check_mark: Full :warning: Partial :cross_mark: None Application clusters supported
1.0 / 1.1 25 20 4 1 20 of 36
1.2 34 29 4 1 45 of 61
1.3 45 39 5 1 55 of 77
1.4 / 1.4.1 53 42 10 1 59 of 83
1.4.2 53 42 10 1 59 of 82²
1.5 / 1.5.1 69 48 12 9 62 of 97
1.6 / 1.6.1 69 48 12 9 62 of 99

¹ Device types a hub is meant to control. Not counted: 9 infrastructure types (root node, bridge, OTA, power source and similar) and 13 controller-only types (explained further down).
² One cluster fewer than 1.4.1 because the spec dropped Ballast Configuration, a draft cluster that was never finalized or used by any device type.

  • :white_check_mark: Full: Homey has a device class for it and implements all its required clusters.
  • :warning: Partial: it works, but some required parts are missing, or Homey has no device class for it and it pairs as an “Other” device whose capabilities still work.
  • :cross_mark: None: it pairs, but does nothing useful.

The low cluster share for 1.0/1.1 is mostly the 13 TV and casting clusters, of which Homey uses 2.

The other 36 clusters in the spec are utility clusters (pairing, security, diagnostics, labels). Homey uses the ones it needs for pairing, firmware updates, battery status, bridges, sharing with other Matter apps and network info. Groups and Binding are not used.

How deep the support goes

A supported cluster doesn’t always mean everything in it is available. Grouped by what you can actually do:

Complete or nearly complete

Buttons (single, double, long press and release triggers), contact/leak/rain/freeze sensors, temperature/humidity/pressure/flow/light sensors, air quality and pollutant sensors, occupancy sensors, soil moisture, color lights (hue/saturation, xy, color temperature, color loop), chimes (pick a sound, turn on/off, play from a flow), meter details, appliance and robot vacuum programs and modes, start/stop/pause/resume for appliances, temperature control, washer/dryer/microwave settings, pumps, water heater boost and Mode Select.

Small gaps: no peak or average values for pollutants, and no “cycle finished” event or remaining time for appliances.

Good basics, some gaps

Function What you get What’s missing
On/Off On/off, power-on behaviour setting Timed on, effects
Dimming Dim level, transition times, dim up/down flow cards Step commands, on-level and min/max settings
Blinds Lift and tilt %, open/close/stop, invert setting Absolute positions, safety status. Homey shows the target position, not the current one
Smoke/CO alarm Smoke and CO alarms, including interconnected alarms Low battery, hardware fault and end-of-life all show as one generic alarm. No self-test or mute
Robot vacuum rooms Clean selected rooms (flow card) Current room, progress, skip room, maps
Filters Filter life %, replace warning Resetting the filter after replacing it
Power metering Power, voltage, current (also 3-phase) Frequency, power factor, reactive and apparent power
Energy metering Imported and exported kWh Periodic energy reports, so devices that only send those show no kWh
Water valve Open/close, opening level Open for a set time, auto-close timer, fault reports
Battery Battery %, low battery alarm Charging state, mains status, time remaining
Fan Fan mode, speed %, swing Natural/sleep wind, airflow direction, speed steps

Basic only

Function What you get What’s missing
Thermostat Off/heat/cool/auto, one setpoint, room and outdoor temperature, temperature offset Presets like Home/Away/Sleep (Matter 1.4), schedules, away setpoints, whether it’s actually heating or cooling right now, heating demand %, fan-only and dry modes
Door lock Lock, unlock, unbolt; normal/vacation/privacy/passage mode; door open or jammed; relock time, LED and volume settings Lock events (who or how it was unlocked, wrong-code alerts), users and PIN/RFID/fingerprint management, access schedules, Aliro, timed unlock. Homey doesn’t send a PIN, so locks set to require one for remote operation will refuse commands
EV charger Enable/disable charging and discharging, charging state, car battery %, max current Charging modes, scheduled charging and charge targets, session energy and duration, “car connected” and fault events, RFID
Media player Play, pause, stop, next, previous, track duration Seek, skip, rewind and fast-forward, playback position, audio and subtitle tracks, input switching

The biggest gaps

  • Cameras, video doorbells and intercoms (Matter 1.5)
  • The new closures: gates, garage doors and similar (Matter 1.5)
  • Energy management: no load control for heat pumps, batteries, solar or EV charger modes, and no energy prices or tariffs (Matter 1.3–1.5)
  • Thermostat presets and schedules (Matter 1.4)
  • Door lock users, PINs and lock events
  • Scenes and groups
  • Switches that control lights directly (binding, see below)
  • Media control beyond play/pause

What “controller-only” means

Some Matter device types work by sending commands to other devices instead of being controlled: light switches, dimmer switches, and remotes for blinds, locks or thermostats. In Matter, these are meant to be bound directly to the device they control. Homey only reads what a device itself offers. It doesn’t set up bindings and can’t act as a binding target, so these types do nothing on their own in Homey.

Most Matter buttons and switches also include a Generic Switch, and that does work: press, long press and multi-press show up as flow triggers.

The 13 controller-only types: On/Off Light Switch, Dimmer Switch, Color Dimmer Switch, Control Bridge, On/Off Sensor, Door Lock Controller, Window Covering Controller, Pump Controller, Thermostat Controller, Closure Controller, Camera Controller, Casting Video Client and Video Remote Control.

Small things I noticed in the code
  • Cluster library version not bumped in 13.5.3: the code says this number must be raised when clusters are added, so already-paired devices get re-checked. It’s still at 2, which is why existing chimes, soil sensors and meters probably need re-pairing (see “New in 13.5.3”).
  • Water Freeze Detector (Matter 1.3): the freeze alarm is implemented, but the device type is missing from Homey’s device-class list, so it pairs as “Other”.
  • Network Infrastructure Manager and Thread Border Router get a router device class but have no capabilities.
  • More Matter 1.5 groundwork is there: Homey’s bundled Matter definitions already include every Matter 1.5 cluster, including the camera and closure ones. Only the mapping to Homey devices is missing.
  • Possible typo: in the conflict list for lights, Dimmable Light appears twice. The second entry looks like it was meant to be Dimmer Switch.
How I checked
  • Spec side: the device type and cluster definitions for each Matter version, from the data_model folder of project-chip/connectedhomeip (1.0 to 1.6.1).
  • Homey side: the Matter code shipped with Homey 13.5.3 (also compared with 13.5.0), specifically the list that maps Matter device types to Homey device classes, and the cluster library that turns clusters into capabilities, settings and flow cards.
  • A device type counts as fully supported when it has a Homey device class and all its required clusters are implemented.
  • Depth: which features, commands and events each supported cluster’s code actually uses.
  • Not tested on real devices, so individual products can behave differently.
