Hi everyone,
I’m new to the Homey community, so first of all - nice to meet you all!
I recently started exploring Thread devices and was wondering if anyone has already managed to integrate an ESP32-H2 as a Full Thread Device (FTD) with Homey Pro.
I found this project as an example: Extend your Thread network with an ESP32 - Timo's Blog
Has anyone tried something similar or has tips on how to get it recognized and connected properly?
Any experiences, advice, or pointers would be really appreciated!
Thanks in advance
Best,
Martin
Hello Martin and welcome,
Interesting! €7 Thread routers
I haven’t got a real life example, but according to Athom knowledge base,
any Thread FTD, with router functionality, should do
https://support.homey.app/hc/en-us/articles/12934291420060-Connecting-a-Matter-or-Thread-Device
Just some random thoughts:
- Homey only supports Matter over Thread, and only certified Matter devices, which this will not be
- I can’t find the required information of my Homey’s Thread network, which is necessary to configure the device to become part of an existing network (although from personal experience I know it will work with an Apple Thread network, so that might be a workaround)
- ESPHome also supports Thread, and setting it up is quite easy: OpenThread Component - ESPHome - Smart Home Made Simple
However, it doesn’t support Matter, only ESPHome’s own protocol. It may work with Homey’s ESPHome app, but I don’t know if Homey, or the app, are able to discover devices over IPv6.
- ESP32C6 devices are typically a bit cheaper than the H2’s, and they also support WiFi6 and BLE5, besides Thread and Zigbee, which makes them more versatile.
