I use the Discourse mobile app to read various forums that are hosted using their software.
One thing that drives me absolutely crazy is the huge Welcome to the Homey Community! banner that takes up literally half of my phone’s screen (iPhone 16, so not a tiny phone!!). I’ve tried looking through various app settings and account settings within Discourse and there seems to be no way to disable it on a per-user account level, however, it does seem possible for the administrators to change this sitewide. I know it’s important to onboard new users and I want to respect that requirement, but does it need to be shown every single day for frequent users?
I found some various other forums discussing the same thing so perhaps we can take some inspiration?
From what I can tell, this is called the “Welcome Banner” in the admin settings.
Is this even possible? I know on desktop I can take advantage of userscript CSS to never see it again, but in the webview of the mobile app, that is not possible.
I just checked: as I have never used the app, I downloaded it, added the Homey Community Forum and logged in. I landed on de default start page (topic overview), with no banner message. Maybe because I disregarded the banner (clicked the X) when initially logging into the forum via the web site (not the app)?
What happens if you log out from the app, log in to the forum via the web, click away the banner and then log back in on the app?
It will stay gone for about a day and then come back. Idk why the session/cookie timer is so low. I wouldn’t care I guess if I only had to dismiss it once every few weeks.
