[APP][Pro&Cloud] Shelly

Then it is probably a unifi problem, maybe you accidentally set up ap isolation , but not a shelly app problem. Hire some help if you can’t figure it out. A thing you Gould try is to make all ap’s powerless and position homey and the ‘em so they can connect to the single ap and see if it then works.

One question …is in the shelly app or in the unifi router or both that I make a static ip for the shelly items?

//P

I have other apps that works fine in homey and the shelly items works fine before but suddenly last night they lost connection.

//P

Do homey talks direct to items or through unifi ap’s?..for example the shelly 2.5 relay is just 3meters from homey and a unifi ap’s.

//P

Then don’t try. Please hire some help.

It seems you dont have the networking skills to solve this on your own. As suggested you are probably better of to get some help. This is basic networking knowledge. But to anwser your question, static IP addresses are assigned in the router. My Shelly app just uses the IP address the device has when it’s paired. So if that changes after pairing there can be issues.

Again basis networking knowledge. Device talk over the local network when connected to the WiFi so there is always some form of network device in between. It doesnt look like distance is your issue but more likely a misconfigured network. A posted a way to check this earlier, have you actually tried that?

I assume you are blaming the Shelly app for your situation, it’s a common thing to do for users when things dont work on their end. But dont you think the other 4500+ Shelly app users would have the same issues as you are experiencing if it was an issue with my app and would also be posting their issues here?

Thanks for your toughts…

I dont blame anyone more then my self and my knowledge…

Iam just amazed at how it could lose its connection to homey overnight when its works perfectly before and even with those ne ap’s…Iam trying to get into the systems and want to learn and I’ll probably cheat this too…Iam grateful for the guidance I can get and of course it is general education but somewhere you have to start and we arr all good at different things.

Today I detected a very weird problem with my Shelly 1PM. Mac address was changed of the one 1PM I have active and therefore the IP address was changed and Homey could not reach the 1PM any more.

Shelly 1PM has firmware v1.11.7 from November 9, 2021.

In my DHCP server:
Old entry: MAC DC:4F:22:76:64:E2 with name: shelly1pm-7664E2
New entry: MAC: E8:68:E7:86:B3:E4 with name: shelly1pm-E868E786B3E4

This is no bug in the Homey shelly app (but will give error), but can explain strange behaviour for 1PM’s which are upgraded to this firmware version. I have not detected this earlier and is probably activated last week when I was upgrading my WiFi network to the latest software and was using the Shelly App on my Android phone (which was a long time ago I used that). At that moment, statistics were not updated any more in my InfluxDB

The most strange (even disturbing) is that the MAC address of the Shelly is changed and that this happened to the 1PM and not to the shelly dimmer2 and shelly 2.5’s I also have in the same WiFi network.

I have issues running the Shelly app.

I have 2 Homey’s. An old 2018 version and the new Homey Pro version.
I bought the second homey to try and resolve the networking issues the Shelly App causes.

However the problem persists. Visually the problem is that the Homey goes offline while trying to resolve the network devices. The homey device shows a red ring. After this the Shelly app tries to restart and do it again. Homey tries this multiple times and after a very long while the app fails and is stopped.

I registered a diagnostic report in the app :
f0c732dd-d2b8-43ae-a4e6-f5ead80d3bce

The steps i’ve taken to resolve the problems are :

  • replaced all network switches in home
    core-switch, server-switch, room1-switch, room2-switch, room3-switch
    Netgear GS728TPv2, Netgear GS110EMX, 3 x Netgear GS108Tv3
  • enabled IGMP snooping on all network components
  • setup IGMP snooping querier on the core-switch
  • enabled my Unifi AccessPoints for IGMP-snooping
  • setup static-ip on shelly devices
  • updated all-firmwares of related components to current releases

The old homey, which does not have a network device discovery app, does not have these kind of problems, only when i install the Shelly app or similar network discovery apps this problem exists.

The Shelly-home android apps (official and alternative) resolve the shelly devices in the network just fine.
Other network devices configured on my new Homey Pro work just fine (LG-TV, Pioneer/Onkyo-AV-receiver, IKEA tradfri-gateway, Honeywell-thermostat). These are cable or wifi connected devices.

As far as I know, the red ring means a crash of the Homey and a reboot. Can you replace the usb power plug of the homey and try again?
Shelly app normally does not crash the homey completly.

I think I heard of this before. It’s related to mDNS flooding. See Shelly app causes Homey to restart continuously and show a red ring · Issue #28 · jghaanstra/cloud.shelly · GitHub

I also think someone fixed it by disabling the bonjour service on the Synology NAS in the same network. If you have a Synology NAS you could look into that.

Either way. I have no control over how Homey handles mDNS and it’s not something I can fix.

I have 2 homey’s, the problem is the same on both. I also replaced the power supplies, multiple times.

@Phuturist.

Indeed, this seems being caused by mDNS flooding by the homey network Discovery process.

I also read the link you sent earlier. And i tried al sorts of network configuration to resolve.

However nothing seems tot help.

Can the app be configured to not do Discovery ?
I dont need it since everything is set as static IP.

Nope, there is no option in Homey’s SDK to disable mDNS

Since the link you provided had been closed as “wontfix”, it seems no further investigation is performed.

That surely means that my issue will not be solved.

The problem with the shelly app however remains.

All (15 other) apps work as designed, but when i install the Shelly app the entire homey becomes unresponsive until the app finnally crashes after a very long time.

I understand that homey/athom themselves require a certain Discovery method.

However it is completly unnecessary, and in my network environment even unwanted.

If your app is supported and certified by athom then this issue needs addressing. First and foremost by athom.

The mDNS discovery is exactly the same as multicast, bonjour, avahi traffic. From a network perspective a terrible discovery technique.
It is dependant on timeouts and WiFi networks do not lend themselves for broadcast traffic.

From an it architectural standpoint this discovery method does not adhere to basic principals. Even though there are technical supporting features, that does not mean one should use them. Especially not when you know WiFi network traffic can and probably will be interrupted.

Athom is not reading this forum.

I have reported a support request to athom.

I did so regarding the same issue six months ago.

I have more information now.

I’ll continue on this quest.

Dear all!

I’m struggling with the following and wonder if anyone can help me (probably its quite easy :slight_smile:). I’m having 4 white LED’s running from the 4 channels on a RGBW shelly. What I need is a flow that synchonizes the output of all 4 channels based with the output of channel 1. So if I dim channel 1 to 50%, I want the other to follow that. Thanks in advance!

If:
Shelly Channel 1 The dimming level has changed.
Then:
Set shelly channel 2 to dimming on (local tag value channel 1)
Set shelly channel 3 to dimming on (local tag value channel 1)
Set shelly channel 4 to dimming on (local tag value channel 1)

If you now dim channel 1 of the Shelly through a flow, the 3 other channels will follow.

so, no one else have theese GU10 RGB?

i have just tried to add a 3 one, and homey wont find the new one, have tried resetting it, firmware upgrading it, ticking of the “Make device discoverable” option, and homey still cant find it, and it works fine in the official shelly app… i have also tried adding an E27 RGB bulb, it seems to work better, and got found by the shelly homey app right away…
