[APP][Pro] Amazon Echo - Looking for testers and contributors

My Flow is a little more complex than that :face_with_hand_over_mouth::face_with_hand_over_mouth::face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Test version 2.3.0 is out: Amazon Echo | Homey

@Pantera_Ruber this one’s for you:

  • New: Announce with Voice. It works with every voice, including Swedish, Danish, Polish and the others Alexa can’t speak itself. Like all announcements, it’s silent during Do Not Disturb.
  • Say with Voice now only lists the voices Alexa can speak directly, and keeps talking during Do Not Disturb.
  • Existing flows that use one of the other voices on Say with Voice keep working. They’re now sent as an announcement, so they finally use the right voice, but go quiet during Do Not Disturb.

Dutch users: Lotte and Ruben are on the announcement side, since Amazon doesn’t list them for Alexa’s normal speech. If they sounded fine to you with Say with Voice before, please let me know.

@staeff Ich verbeuge mich!

Vielen Dank. I will test it asap.

It seems to work! Thank you very much!

@staeff : However, allow me to confuse you. I have old flows with the “say” card. This now works flawlessly with Danish and Swedish, but I cannot create new “say” cards with Danish or Swedish. However I can create new “announce” cards with Swedish and Danish. Interesting! (Runnning 2.3.0)

That’s intended. Alexa’s normal speech can’t do Swedish or Danish, so Say with Voice doesn’t offer them anymore. Use Announce with Voice for those in new flows. Old Say cards with those voices keep working because they’re sent as announcements now to not break completely, but they now also stay quiet during Do Not Disturb.

Hi Stefan @staeff

I’m trying to find a way to connect/read data from the Amazon Smart Air Quality sensor. I read somewhere that the HA Echo integration can read its data readings, but so far I haven’t found a way to get it to work with Homey. This is what it looks like in the Alexa mobile app, but I was hoping to be able to create Flows with it:

I was hoping you might be able to offer some insights?

Much appreciated

Hello staeff,

a really good app. No problem to stay connected anymore. Thank you.

I just created a group device to anounce some alerts through all Alexas in the house. Unfortunetly there are not all flow cards availible in a group device like in a single Alexa.

I wonder, if thats not possible or you just forget some.

Sadly it’s not possible to run any commands besides volume and media control on groups. This is not a limitation of the app but of the Alexa/Echo ecosystem.

Hi @Dietrich_Kassner

Feel free to pinch some of my working on Advanced Flows I set up to do just this (depending on an AnnouncemeAll variable), and to also make announcements based on presence detection but default to all if no presence detected. They also mute any music or TV in the relevant rooms for the announcement. If you want any assistance deciphering my chicken scribble just ask.

Hello staeff and Drako74,

I thought it is a limitation on Alexa.

I appreciate your display of you solution, Drako74. I think it’s a good start for my own flow.

i’ve been using this app the past month or so as well as the other amazon alexa app for homey previously till it had some issues.

i havent done enough testing but what i have noticed is that it may say the ‘then’ card twice even though i have only one ‘then’ card to say something on my echo device. i suspect it may have started when i switched to the early access of Alexa+. will continue to monitor and see whether opting out of alexa+ stops it from repeating itself with the same ‘then’ card.

i did create a new flow and it does repeat it twice even though i only have one ‘then’ card.

thought id just put something here and see if anyone else had this issue?

@staeff - maybe i’m blind and can’t see the tree for the forest
Is there a possibility to have access to a timer which was started over voice command to alexa? I ask because i want to display the running timer on my Ulanzi Pixel Clock (AwtrixNG), but i could not find available cards / triggers to realize it in my advanced flow - thx for feedback.

I thought i ask the master of the App himself before i ask the guys in this thread…[APP][Pro] AWTRIX - Connected Smart Clock for your Smart Home - #307 by Amersfoort

In HO ist working what I have learned…

Hi @loy80y, thanks for reporting this. The app sends one Speak command per card and never repeats it, so let’s find out where the second one comes from:

  1. Does the Flow run twice? Put a timeline notification next to the Speak card. If you get two entries, the trigger is firing twice and the Echo isn’t the problem.
  2. Is the other Alexa app still installed? If an old Flow there reacts to the same trigger, you’ll hear the message twice.
  3. Does Announce do the same? And does it happen on another Echo?

If it really is one Flow run and one card, please turn on “Enable diagnostic logging” in the app settings. Then trigger the Flow until it repeats and send me a diagnostic report, with a note of the time it happened. One thing I want to rule out: when Amazon answers with a server error, the library waits a couple of seconds and sends the request again. If Amazon had actually carried out the first request anyway, you’d hear it twice. If that’s what’s going on, it will show up in the log.

Opting out of Alexa+ is a good test too. Let us know what you find.

Hi @Rammstein, the app doesn’t have any timer cards at the moment.

It’s technically possible: the library this app uses is the same one behind Home Assistant’s Alexa Devices integration, which is why it works there. It can read the active timers for each Echo, but only the one that ends soonest. That would allow a “next timer ends at” value and possibly “timer started / ended” triggers, and the countdown for the Awtrix could be calculated from the end time. I’ll put it on my list, but I can’t say when it will be ready.

Thx for your feedback and your explanation! Sounds great and would be fine if you implement this feature ind the future! Looking forward to getting to test it, specially in connection with my Pixel Clock :-)…aim appreciate your work & help!

Flow does not run twice. I’ve ran several tests previously. I’ve even created a test standard flow just to outrule its something wrong with my setup. i use the test button and it said it twice even though i only have one card which announces it to my speaker. from what i remember i did leave a timeline notification to see whether it was triggering that flow twice and it wasnt.

No just the single app. i haven’t used the other app up until a recent update to resolve the stability issues of the other app. i’ve been using your appthe past couple of months. i started to notice it saying the announcments twice around the same time i enabled Alexa+. I’m sure it was working fine when i transferred over to using your app from the other Alexa app. Meaning announcements only triggered once as per the flow i set up.

I mainly use the announce for most of my flows.

I do remember with the other app that it was also working fine meaning it didnt say it twice. this was a few months ago and i didnt have alexa+ enabled. I’ve got the other alexa app running and just created a test flow and it is saying it twice even though i have one card.

I’ll run some more tests with alexa+ and without it enabled when i can.

funny you mention announce while i had the other alexa app running i switched from both say and announce. it didnt double up when using ‘say’ but did double up using ‘announce’ meaning it said it twice. i quickly switched to your app and created a quick flow and it also did the same. meaning ‘announce’ said it twice whereas using ‘say’ said it once. whisper only said it once also for both alexa homey apps.

ill jump onto my pc and do some more testing now with diagnostic logging on if i can replicate it easily. bit easier to do tests on my pc.

so did a few tests. if there isnt much text using announce it will trigger once. if there is alot of text to announce it would finish announcing it and then announce again. this is with alexa+ enabled. below tests is with a lot of text for the speaker to announce.

also did another test below:

without alexa+ it works fine. meaning it announces just the one time. thought id also enable diagnostic logging without alexa+ enabled to see if there is any difference.

Test version 2.3.1 is out: Amazon Echo | Homey

  • An Echo or speaker group no longer stays on “playing” after the music stopped, and Pause no longer fails when nothing is playing.
  • If your Amazon account has no country set, the app now tells you how to fix it.
  • Updated the Amazon library the app talks through.

@loy80y, thanks for the logs. In both, the app sends the announcement once and Amazon accepts it first time. Only Alexa+ plays it twice, so the repeat happens on Amazon’s side, which is also why the other Alexa app does it. Could you try:

  1. A short (about 3 s) and a medium (8–10 s) announcement: which ones repeat?
  2. A routine in the Alexa app that announces your long text: does that repeat too?

Until then, Say doesn’t repeat, so you can use it for long messages. It just has no chime and keeps talking during Do Not Disturb.
