Shelly Control - Smart home automation is that easy!

:warning: This app is currently in open beta! :warning:

Central topic for questions/discussing the Shelly Control App. You can use this topic to ask questions and share your experiences with the Shelly devices, when used in this app.

During the open beta we will try to keep up with this topic, but in general this thread is not actively monitored by Shelly or Drenso. For official support use the e-mail link in the AppStore Support Contact ».

Why is there a new app?

The original Shelly app (community topic) was inherit from another developer, which made an excellent app which serves more than 40k installations and 200k devices :chart_increasing:. While we did our best to extend the existing app with all new devices, it became clear that certain choices made in the past were limiting our options to resolve (new) issues and add new functionality. With this complete rewrite we have aligned the implementation with the latest recommendations from both Shelly and Homey, so we can offer a better and more stable experience to our users!

By publishing this as a completely new app we allows users to start with the new app without breaking their existing flows and installations, so they can safely migrate whenever they like. The old app will keep working as is, but bugs will no longer be fixed and new devices will no longer be added.

FAQ

  1. Why aren’t all devices supported?
We are currently in early access with this new app, which means that we are still working on adding support for all Shelly devices. If you want to be notified when your device becomes support, just let us know using our support email address!
  2. Which devices will be supported?
The goal is to support all Gen 2+ and Powered by Shelly devices (using LAN, Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave and cloud), depending on sample availability.

New here! I’m planning to add Shelly relays to my new home and was looking at the Shelly 1PM Mini Gen4. My initial plan was to connect it via Zigbee, but I’ve just come across this app that uses Wi-Fi instead, which got me wondering.

A few questions:

  • Can the Shelly 1PM Mini Gen4 be added to Homey directly via Zigbee?

  • If so, why would I use the Wi-Fi app instead?

  • Are there any limitations when pairing it through Zigbee?

  • I was under the impression that Wi-Fi should be avoided for smart home devices, since it’s slower and having too many devices on the same network can congest it. Is that still a valid concern?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can add the 1PM Mini Gen4 using Zigbee, but you will need to resort to the old app for now. This new app will also receive Zigbee support in the future.

The Zigbee communication method is more limited compared to the Wi-Fi method, which is easily explainable by the more limited bandwidth and the fact that most communication is done using methods defined in the ZCL standard. For basic usage there isn’t that much of a different, unless you are looking at update frequency; using Zigbee power measurement updates will be less frequent to prevent overloading the Zigbee network.

There is no single good method of connectivity for smart home, it greatly depends on what you are planning to do with the device and what your requirements are. I will not dive into the details as there are just too many to discuss here, but there should be enough online sources so you can make the choice for yourself.

Thanks for the clarification! One last question: is the WiFi configuration in this new app cloud-based? In other words, if the internet goes down, will the devices stop working as well?

In combination with a Homey Pro, Shelly WiFi devices can be used/controlled fully offline:

  • The device itself has an integrated web configuration page to set up and configure the device. You can also do this via the Shelly mobile app on your phone via Bluetooth.
  • (the Shelly app for) Homey Pro connects to the device via your home network; no cloud connection involved. You need to make sure the Shelly device is set up (and connected to your home network) before the Shelly app for Homey Pro is able to pair it with Homey.

Using the Shelly cloud (connection) is optional.
Internet is needed for e.g. firmware updates of the device.

Internet and access to the Shelly cloud (to control the device) is needed though if you plan to pair a Shelly WiFi device with the cloud version of Homey.

That’s with Homey Pro, Homey Cloud obviously does need the internet. So it’s “the Shelly app for Homey Pro

That’s a relevant point, indeed. I have updated my post.

Hi @drenso , will the irrigation control unit be compatible?

The goal is to support all Gen 2+ and Powered by Shelly devices (using LAN, Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave and cloud), but everything depends on our available time (this isn’t our only app) and the availability of device samples. Currently we haven’t got any Powered by Shelly device samples with the exception of the Ogemray 25A device, so we cannot give any indication as to when support for a specific device will land. We do prioritise device that aren’t supported yet with the old app.

We can tell that the Presence Gen4 will be included in the coming release, hopefully somewhere this week!

Support for the Shelly Presence Gen4 sensor was just added, and detection and installation went smoothly. The testing can begin…

Bart

I currently have 90 Shelly devices. Will it be possible to switch to the new app without having to re-register each device or reconfigure every flow?

This App installs alongside of the non-beta version. So your existing automations, should not be affected. But it’s a beta version, so don’t take my observations as gospel.

So am I right in thinking that I can’t move all my devices over to the new app at once, but have to transfer each one individually? :exploding_head::partying_face:. On top of that, there’s the hassle of having to fix every single flow . Well, that’s it for me then – I’m sticking with the old app.

You don’t have to move the existing automations, they still function. I can control them as they where installed. I only needed the new “experimental” App to activate the Presence Gen4 sensor, because that is not yet active in the non-experimental App version.

What happens with sensors that are automated via the experimental App once it’s fully released, I don’t know. I hope I don’t have to reregister.

Yes, this is true. That is unfortunately a limitation of Homey that we cannot work around.

But there is good news: you do not need to migrate if you do not want to! You can run both apps next to each other, and we will be maintaining the “old” app for some time to come. However, we will no longer add new devices to it. So if you need support for new devices, you will need the new Shelly Control app. It is currently in beta as we are still refining some aspects and preparing for the coming firmware updates, but as soon as that is done this will be released officially!

Well, I’m just telling you what I’ve noticed so far.
Even after I deactivated the previous Shelly app, the new app couldn’t find a single device. This means that ‘all’ Shelly devices must first be removed from the old app before they can be used in the new one at all. Your company is clearly capable of building a new app, but has any of your clever minds considered the hassle you’re imposing on Shelly users – and in particular, how you’re penalising your most loyal users?
What about Generation 1 devices? Rubbish, or will you replace them with compatible ones? If the old app is eventually shut down, the Generation 1 and 2 devices are destined for the bin.

Until you get your act together, I won’t be buying any more Shelly devices in future, so I won’t need a new app either. It’s a shame, as I’ve used your products a lot and enjoyed them, but I’ll now be ordering from another manufacturer. Of course, I won’t be testing or reviewing any more Shellys on German forums in future.

I’m really angry!

When will it be possible to use Shelly Bluetooth devices with it?

For example:
• Shelly BLU Wall Switch 4 ZB DK (Bluetooth + Zigbee battery-powered switch)
• Shelly BLU Button Tough 1 ZB (battery-powered switch, Bluetooth + Zigbee)

Wow, did you even read the messages? You can keep using the app you are using now, you can keep adding devices to it if you like, you just need the new app when you want to add newly released devices. They even stated that the old app will be maintained, and I assume usage numbers will eventually make the decision to drop support. So why are you even angry?

Also,@drenso stated that gen2 will be added to the new app as well. So only gen1 will not be supported in there (which uses a completely different API, see https://shelly-api-docs.shelly.cloud/, so that isn’t a weird choice IMO).

We all know that the old app will be discontinued sooner or later. And yes, I’ve read the report.
Why am I getting worked up? Because I’m probably one of the people with the largest Shelly installations in Homey. I have 90 active devices with nearly 200 flows, which I’d have to migrate to the new app in the medium term, at great expense of my time. I wouldn’t gain anything from it at all, except wasting my time. I’d be happy to invite a Shelly employee to migrate my installation for me.
To top it all off, I’ll then have to throw away my Generation 1 devices.
Money down the drain – that’s exactly why I’m getting worked up. Especially as Shelly surely has the capability to offer a migration via the cloud. Under these circumstances and with such an unclear future outlook, I won’t be buying any more Shellys.
If I have to start all over again at some point, I’ll do it with a different company! You’re welcome to keep using Shellys, but for me, this is a slap in the face for the most loyal and biggest Homey Shelly users.

Sorry, but you are making a lot of assumptions while it has been clearly stated that the old app will remain functional and can be run together with the new app. No need to throw away your devices or to migrate at all if you are happy with them :+1:t2:
