Tado API changes

Hi, I’m just wondering if there’s any impact to homey interaction with Tado due to the API changes tado are introducing?

I’m also curious what’s going to happen to the tado app for homey. This because of the email from tado about their api.:

We have an important update for users of our REST API, which—while never officially supported for third parties—we’ve historically left open and unrestricted. We’ve always believed in fair use, and we intend to continue supporting that principle.

The API is commonly used by third-party and open-source platforms (e.g., Home Assistant), as well as by users running their own custom scripts. Nevertheless, a small fraction of very frequent API users are currently responsible for a disproportionately high share of our server expenses.

To ensure long-term stability and to avoid restricting access for everyone, we will begin introducing daily usage limits for API calls.

Your daily quota will depend on whether you have an active tado° Auto-Assist subscription:

Without Auto-Assist: 100 requests/day
A small daily quota, which should still support basic use cases that are not available via tado’s local APIs: HomeKit for V3/V3+ devices or Matter for tado° X devices. We have updated the documentation on how to access the REST API to reflect these changes.

With Auto-Assist: 20.000 requests/day
This should cover even more demanding use cases, and the subscription fees enable us to offset the increased costs associated with additional server calls.

We’ve shared these changes very early in our consideration process with Home Assistant, the largest open-source software using the unofficial tado° REST API, asking them to adapt their integration to rely more on tado’s local APIs. We understand this creates challenges for community projects. Therefore, we will slowly ramp down limits over the next few months for a smooth transition.

Our goal is to strike a fair balance, ensuring that responsible use remains possible while keeping infrastructure costs under control.

Thank you for your understanding.
Warm regards,
Your tado° Team

For the tado app by Athom you’d contact homey.app/support;
For the tadoZones app by Martin you’d post into the app topic.

But the response from tado (posted by KikkerX10) basically says:
A. Without the Auto-Assist subscription: limited to 100 requests/day
A small daily quota, which should still support basic use cases that are not available via tado’s local APIs: HomeKit for V3/V3+ devices or Matter for tado° X devices.
(imho) this means local connected tado devices with Homekit / Matter are not restricted.

B. With Auto-Assist: 20.000 requests/day
This should suffice for controlling thermostat + several TRV’s + Aircons.
I mean, twenty thousand calls a day is quite a lot (= 833 calls/hr <> 13.8 calls/min). And this doesn’t include Homekit / Matter connected tado devices.

Think before you buy cloud based devices (including Homey).

So what’s the point of the forums if I have to open private support tickets? I think something like this would be better if the wider audience are aware.

And thanks for the useful insight about cloud devices, I’m sure 2 year ago me would have appreciated it . .

If you want to discuss how this forum, or Athom support, works, this isn’t the right thread.

Sorry, only trying to help my man.
Of course you’re free to start a discussion, but I expected you want answers here.

I was pointing you to the creator of the ‘official’ tado app, Athom, because they should have your answer.
The preferred way of contact is per Support (as mentioned at the app store page).

So, I was not sending you to Support, I was showing the best way to contact the app developer. Which happens to be contacting Support.

.

Wow

It was a hint to people considering buying cloud devices, smartass. It was not addressed to you, because it would be pointless, wouldn’t it!

I cannot interpret this any other way as you being cynical. If this is the way you like to thank folks trying to help you, just fuck off.

It was absolutely me being cynical because your comment was pointless. “Oh you’re having a problem with your device, maybe you shouldn’t have bought it”

That’s how your response sounds, maybe think about how your comments sound before posting

I understand that but this forum is to discuss the apps. I’m not looking for support, my integration works just fine right now. I’m asking how the changes might affect it, which I feel is a discussion topic, not a support request.

If nobody here has access to the source code of the Athom app, nobody here will be able to discuss this in any meaningful way. We don’t know if the Homey app “relies more on tado’s local API’s” like the Home Assistant integration, we don’t know how often the app makes cloud API requests, we don’t know if the app will automatically be able to use the increased rate limits if you have a subscription, we don’t know anything.

Because the open window detection in my tado devices has stopped working, I contacted support and try to find a way to contact the developer at Athom responsible for Athoms tado app, but to no avail. I also do not expect that Athom will take any steps towards fixing the problem:

Daphne from tado writes:

”Hello Florian,

I appreciate your reply.

In accordance with your request, I have forwarded this issue to our developer.

He has mentioned that the data is not being received from the Tado device. This suggests that the device may be faulty or that Tado has changed the API. Unfortunately, we are unable to implement any additional changes or fix this issue for you at the moment.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Wishing you a wonderful day!

Best regards,

Daphne”

Hello and welcome,

Only in case you have the tado Auto-Assist subscription, or if you are an early adopter:
Consider using the tadoZones app by Martin Verbeek, next to the tado app by Athom.
You’ll soon discover the Athom app is very, very limited.
(both apps run fine side-by-side)

Hi Peter, thanks for the welcome and what a start! I really appreciate your recommendation of Martin Verbeek’s app which I didn’t have on the radar yet. I am an early adopter of tado, with Auto Assist included and it absolutely fixed my problem, the open window detection is working flawlessly with Martin’s app. So thanks also to Martin Verbeek for investing the time and keeping the app up to date and working properly. I can only reiterate the recommendation for anyone else who should run into problems with Athoms own app to make the switch. Thanks again and best regards, Florian
