Styrbar not reacting properly after migrating to Homey Pro 2023

Hi all,

I just migrated to Homey 2023 from my Homey 2019 and so far everything is worse. I don’t understand why.

First I had a super hard time connecting the Homey Pro 2023 to my WiFi in the first place. It eventually worked and I added all my devices to it again manually.

My lights (IKEA Tradfri and Philips hue mixed) are controlled via ikea styrbar remotes and I cycle through dimm levels via variables. With my Homey Pro 2019 this worked like a charm.

Now that I have the Homey PRO 2023, all Styrbars have become extremely unreliable. Sometimes they react immediately. Most of the time I have to klick 3-10x until the light reacts. Once they are „awake“ it seems like they are more responsive again for a while, but also here it sometimes is not the case and it stops reacting quickly again.

I honestly don’t know what’s the problem. I checked in the developer settings and found that my zigbee is on channel 20, so I set my 2.4Ghz WiFi 6 to channel 1, but also this doesn’t help. Repairing the remotes also doesn’t really help longterm (it maybe helps short term). Batteries are all brand new. Software updates also didn’t help.

I have quite some Thirdreality smartplugs and two innr smart plugs. Removing the innr smart plugs also doesn’t help.

Does anyone have an idea or used styrbar remotes with Homey Pro 2023? It’s extremely frustrating to put so much money into the new hub in the hope of faster and better smarthome experience but in the end it just gets slower and worse overall…

Thanks so much!

Are these all Zigbee devices you are talking about?

Did you migrate by restoring a back-up? If so, you might need to reset your Zigbee network (via the option in the Zigbee section of the Homey Developer Tools) and repair (NOT re-pair) all Zigbee devices. Use the ‘Try to repair’-option, you’ll find in the device tile’s maintenance menu. This way your flows will remain intact after the repair. Mains powered router devices first, then battery powered end-devices.

Keep in mind that a Zigbee reset might change the Zigbee channel. You’ll have to keep resetting until Homey selects the your desired channel.

Due to the migration the ‘coordinator’ (your Homey) changes and possibly also the Zigbee channel. This can cause issues when trying to migrate an existing Zigbee network.

Thank you @SunBeech. Yes it’s allmost all zigbee in my smarthome. I have one (new) thread sensor but the styrbar problem was also there before I paired this.

I did intentionally not use the backup - I paired all devices new and set up the advanced flows new

Would a zigbee reset in the advanced settings still be the way to go?

No, in that case I would not perform a reset.

Are the IKEA Styrbar remotes the only devices that do not work as expected? Or do you experience a general issue with Zigbee devices?

I notice the delay/sleep with the styrbars and also ikea rodred remotes. Via the app all lights react instantly. Also the thirdreality plugs react fine…

Does that mean that those remotes are paired directly with Homey, but the lights are paired to their own hub (Hue, IKEA) and those hubs are paired via WiFi to Homey? If so then the WiFi connection between Homey and your home network might be relevant to look into.

Can you check something: create a simple flow that is triggered when you press a button on one of the Zigbee remotes and then places a message on your Homey’s timeline. Check if the message appears instantly or you notice the same delay as when switching on a light. Repeat this several times to check whether the behavior is consistent.

I will try this when I’m home!

All Ikea bulbs are paired directly, the hue bulbs are paired via the hue hub which I added with the hue app. But I haven’t noticed a clear pattern that it’s always the hue or always the ikea bulbs that are lagging… it’s both sometimes yes and sometimes no.

@SunBeech i did the test, thanks for the idea this was a good one.

So basically i only get the timeline notification when the light is reacting. When i press it but the light is not reacting, i also dont get the notification. This means the Styrbar-Homey connection is the unstable one, right?

Yes, that’s fair to assume indeed.

Do those remotes connect directly to Homey or via another (mains powered) Zigbee router device (like a smart plug). You can check this by looking at the (last known) route displayed in the Homey Developer Tool for the remotes.

How far are the remotes located from Homey or the router device?

They seem to all be connected to the homey via ikea tradfri lightbulbs.

I noticed also in the developer tool that the smartplugs show quite some high TX Error rates (6-12%) but it doesn’t appear that the styrbars that don’t react are connected via those… I also don’t know how often this TX error rate refreshes, because I also unplugged some of them yesterday to figure out if they are causing problems.

Our flat ist not too big and homey is located very centered, so the styrbars are all max 5meters away from it.

Would it make sense instead of repairing the styrbars, to repair the light bulbs instead?

I assume the IKEA lightbulbs are powered permanently?

I don’t think re-pairing the lightbulbs would fix it, as you already re-paired them earlier.

The batteries of the remotes are still ok? Perhaps you could check if replacing the battery in one of the remotes has an effect on that remote.

And what happens if you power down Homey for 15 minutes, power on Homey and give it some time to rebuild the Zigbee network?

I don’t have really any other suggestions at this point .

Batteries are brand new. 15 min shutdown didn’t help. And yes, the bulbs are permanently powered.

anyone else some ideas? I was thinking of deleting everything except one styrbar and one light bulb each, see if it works properly, and then one at a time add one new device until it lags… and then get rid of this product.

That’s too bad. If you don’t mind removing devices from your Homey you could try your suggestion indeed. Then you start off with a clean sheet more or less.

Here is a little update from my side. I replaced all my ikea styrbars with hue dimmer and it works perfectly fine.

I am still trying to get the ikea dimmer a bit more reliable and realized something today that i want to share. I have yet to observe if it really makes a difference.

Sonos devices have something called Sonos Net. And it turned out that Sonos Net was on channel 6 for me - you can set that in the sonos app. So even though i changed my WIFI to channel 1 (because Zigbee was on channel 20) i still had the Sonos unknowingly at channel 6, which might have led to some interferences.
