Shelly button and mobile hotspot

Has anyone tried to use the shelly button with a mobile hotspot? For me it’s not working.
Thanks.

How is this Homey related, ZeroSugar?

It’s a wifi button, Peter.

There’s very little useful information in “not working”. Could you be more specific? Is the Homey connected to the same hotspot?

How is that related to Homey?

He wants to connect it to Homey, I suppose.
In that case it is a TCP/IP network related issue.
As a hotspot is a public network, and Homey is on your local network, you have at least to open a port in your router. And you need a network tracer to see what is going on.
As usually connecting devices only works when the device ánd Homey are on the same local network, eighter wireless or wired, it will not connect als local network protocols are involved.
Maybe Matter and Thread are more suited for this situation.

Well, currently the shelly wifi button is linked to homey, that whenever i “single push” the button, it starts a flow in homey. This is working here at my house with my wifi. Now , i want to do this as well with the wifi of my phone mobile hotspot (eg in my car) . Shouldn’t that work as well?

No, it’s not connected to the same hotspot. Should that be so ?

Hi Rmb,
My wifi button is cloud enabled. I thought, using the wifi button with my mobile hotspot would trigger it in the cloud.

Below an idea of how i thought it should work:

The Shelly app always works with local connections only on Homey Pro.

If we’re talking of Homey Pro it will only work if they’re on the same WiFi network as that is independent of any cloud, the Pro communicates with all Shelly WiFi devices via your own network. For Homey “Cloud” I’m not 100% sure. Technically it might perhaps work to some extent but I expect both Shelly’s and Athom’s cloud services need to agree on how to handle an oddball case like that.

Ok, so it will not work then :roll_eyes:

It might work, if you can set-up a VPN (virtual private network) so Homey thinks it is linked locally.
But just a thought. It might not work or it might be an overkill, depending on your needs.

If you want to use the button outside of your house and it works only, when your Smartphone is next to it, why is not possible to “push the button” via your Homey mobile app?

Yes, i could use it via my Homey mobile app…but not in the car whilst driving.

If you set up a VPN your telephone will seem to be locally connected your Homey. I wonder if that is also the case voor the WiFi device, as the software most likely will not be designed to do so. As your telephone is not a general router. In that case you connect a general router to your hotspot and connect your WiFi device to the router’s WiFi. If you are not a networkspecialist an undoable job.

  • I’m not sure if using a VPN while tethering is activated will include the devices connected to the phone in the VPN network. If it does or it will just use be known under the address of the phone but still has access to other IP address within the VPN network and the Shelly button is therefor capable of reaching Homey’s IP (and this is correctly configured in the Shelly button config) this should work fine with the Shelly app;
  • This will also work fine when the button is connected to a Homey Cloud instance without additional config;
  • This will also work when using custom external Homey webhooks for the Shelly button actions which are send over internet. This bypasses a connection between the Shelly Button and the Shelly app for Homey.

Based on the original question and response from the topic starter options 1 & 3 might be a little too technical to set up.

Hi all,
thanks for all the suggestions / help…but i’m going to give up on this.
Looking for some other challenges :slight_smile:

Finally found a solution for my problem. I wanted to use the shelly button to open a gate (and do some other checks in homey)…but as i already mentioned, that didn’t work.

Now, i threw away the crappy shelly button and bought myself a flic button :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: .
Using a simple webhook, i now can start my flows from this button…in my car ! Fantastic.

You should do your homework. Just because you bought a WiFI product that doesnt fit your use case and you are not tech savvy enough to make it work doesnt mean it’s a crappy product. If you would have bought a Shelly BLU Button 1 you would have had the same experience as with a Flic button. Even for less money although I must admit the Shelly button doesnt look as nice and for sure doesnt smell as good.
