Ready to start building... But just got a question

So been a while but I got all my smart home pieces in place and ready to start the build.

I have a house that has lots of thick walls and metal studs. So, signals like Wi-Fi sometimes struggle.

So, because I want to do this once and hopefully set and forget for the base stuff.

I have a Homey Pro, Homey Bridge and now Homey Self Hosted Server. Went with SHS because I have a high-powered NAS and the extra capacity and resources of that I am hoping to utilize.

My question is if I add my Zigbee or Wi-Fi devices, do I have to add them on specific devices? Or will the system pick up the best option?

I am trying to get my head round this last question.

You can connect it to either Homey SHS (which uses the Bridge to communicate) or Homey Pro. If you want to import devices from Homey Pro to SHS or the other way around, you can use the HomeyLink app.

Thanks for the quick answer

If you were to do this setup, how would you do it?

I appreciate your knowledge and experience

Is it a Homey Pro 2023? Then I would install all the BLE/ZigBee/ZWave/RF/IR devices on the Homey Pro and install the HomeyLink app on the SHS to use them in SHS. I would put the Bridge in Satellite Mode to the Homey Pro to extend the signal.

You can install all apps that don’t need wireless communication (LAN, Cloud, Tools apps) on the SHS.

So to put the Bridge in Satellite mode is that as simple as add it as a device on the Homey Pro

It’s all in the knowledge base, Robert.

Thanks

Actually, if you have HSH running on a container on your nas, I would simply use that one with a Homey Bridge and not use the Homey Pro. Just add the bridge to the HSH and then add all the devices the HSH as well.

IMHO, the HSH is a far more advanced setup for a number of reasons.
1: You are able to create backups of your container outside of the stupid Homey backup program, and are free to install it on a different device, should you want to upgrade in the future.
2. The NAS is probably a way more powerful machine than the Homey Pro with more memory. This will allow you to run way more apps. Especially when Atom is adding more and more memory intense features to Homey in the future.
3. If you already have a Nas running, why would you add another device that also uses power?
4. The HSH is also cheaper than the Homey Pro. But as you already own a Homey Pro, you might be able to sell it on?

The only downside of running a HSH on a nas, is VLAN setup if you run multiple VLANs. For security reasons it is advised to have separate VLANS for your IoT devices and your trusted clients. This is because many IoT devices will not receive security updates often which leaves them vulnerable. Putting them on a separate VLAN can help you keep your client devices safe by isolating the VLANs with firewall rules. However, when you put your HSH on your NAS this might become complicated, as you want to be able to access your nas from your client network, but you want to isolate the HSH from your clients which runs on the same machine. Some NAS’s allow you to configure VLANS for each container. You could check the manual of your NAS if yours also allows this.
