Negative prices > stop or reduce Solar production

Sorry unclear, now updated: I switched to “dynamic prices” electricity contract. AND gave the contractor (Frank Energy) control over my gateway (that is controlled via the enphase cloud).

After that my setup no longer worked…

[reason for giving them control: they have a “smart return energy” option, they give you a 10% bonus if you ket them control your gateway so they will switch it off when prices go negative. Trying that option…!]

Unfortunately nothing happens at all while switching.
I ran into a picture of someone who had it set up differently. The resistor was used as input for ‘I’ or ‘O’ which could make sense since disconnecting this circuit results in stopping production.

I will first contact my installer tomorrow whether my Gateway has this DRM function activated or if they can grant access to additional gateway settings.

The setup is clear but how the resitor should be positioned in which situation remains unclear.

Changing of additional settings in an Enphase manager (whether accessible by the homeowner or installer) yet to be sorted out

There are 2 ways: remove (open contact in serie) or shortcut (close contact, parallel), both should work.

I have it the same way you did

Its negative prices time again.

For people searching solutions…

It worked fine again yesterday

After an update a few months ago it stopped working here. On what firmware is your Envoy?

Did you give control to a third party?

The envoy can be controlled in 3 ways:

  • Limit via gateway (remote controlled party)
  • Limit via relay
  • Disable

If it is switched the relay will no longer work.

How do you access this menu? I’ve given up on this solution since DRM functionality has been disabled by firmware update by Enphase pushing customers to purchase an upgrade.

I have a S-Standard-EU Gateway running on firmware D8.3.5286

Enphase advised me to upgrade my Gateway to a metered version and buy additional spools to measure import and export (which i can already log with my Homey Energy Dongle).

My resistor is currently removed and this has no effect on production.

I wonder how you manage to keep your setup working

Several months ago I have given control to my electricity supplier, but until that moment it worked fine. The moment I switched, my relais did stop working, But my supplier is shutting it down correctly so DRM is still working (but in a different setting)

I think only suppliers can, got this screenshot from the internet

They don’t shut it down by DRM. DRM is local. They shut it down by the cloud. I tried all settings but nothing seems to work.

Correct, they shutt down via cloud. (Its still DRM)

Detail of all methods are described here (article may.2025).

Is confirmed by more people in that page, unfortunately.

But they also say there is another way now (described for HA) via api call ot a relais

I checked, I switched to smart charging in june, that is about the time they did the firmware upgrade that seems to disable it…

It is indeed possible via HA, and I have this working. However, operation via the cloud is delayed. Sometimes by as much as half an hour. Even when I turn it on or off in the installer tool, this delay persists. I am looking for a solution that switches instantly, and preferably a local solution.

I just got access to my Enphase Envoy Standard (so, not the metered version) using Modbus, and validated the relevant registers to control the “Limit Max Power Pct Enable [40310]” and “Limit Max Power Pct Setpoint [40311]” values exist.

Those registers are mentioned in the official Enphase documentation for use with Victron Energy (https://enphase.com/en-gb/download/ac-coupling-victron-battery-inverters-using-modbus-tcpip), and if you are using the right mbpoll commands you can read most values (I made an overview of SunSpec model 1 & 701 - 704). Most registers return that that specific one isn’t supported, but the two registers needed contained the expected 0 and 100 values. I’ve successfully changed the values to 1 and 50, so lets see whether that has worked when the sun returns tomorrow!

And, it doesn’t work . The envoy has an error state (which is quite hidden as normal user), and using my installer account I can see a "Production Limiting Requires Production Meter"-alert**.**

So if we want to limit the power delivery to the net, you need a metered gateway? Unfortunately I have the standard :smiling_face_with_tear:

Or did somebody manage to get this working with the standard still?

It must be possible with standard gateway too using cloud.

I have given control tonmy electricity supplier and last few days it has worked nicely.

Not sure about delays, but 20min delay is still better than hours of negative prices.

(The prices 1st go very low and rhen negative, so shutting down early will not cost you a few cents)

The only thing you can do with the standard is fully disabling the power production and you need an installer account for that as well. Also note that it depends on your local regulations as to what Enphase is forced to make possible.

So yes, you need to have the metered one to be able to use percentage based control.

Thanks for testing! (Best way to find out..)

Strange that enphase does not support it. My solaredge is about 5 years older and does niceley reduce power via homey…

You dont need to measure to reduce.. (homey can measure)

Yeah, this is where I regret my choice for Enphase… Anyways, will be upgrading to a metered one when the battery (Sig Energy, not Enphase) will be installed in a couple of weeks.
