I’m not sure if this is the right category for this submission but I wanted to give feedback on the latest mobile app, v10.0.0 currently in test.
This morning I found that my mobile app had updated overnight to v10.0.0 (Homey Mobile App Changelog | Homey) - forgetting I had signed up to be a tester for the Homey app on the Play Store. I primarily use Homey from my mobile devices.
To keep it short and sweet, I’m not a fan of the stylistic changes for device tiles. In the previous version, understanding the current status of your device was easy, while keeping the GUI simple and sleek. If you required more information from the device, then you held the device tile for more. That’s what a home page/dashboard should be (in my opinion), an understanding of the current position at a glance.
The design has now opted for excess information per device tile. Personally, I perceive this as an overload, and in many instances, repeating information.
For devices with an on/off/play/pause status, the indicator top right mirrors bottom left.
For sensors, the button top right is not useful - this may be specific to me with Aqara FP300’s as they feature ‘Identify’ button, but I believe could be generalised depending on device.
For battery powered devices, the battery percent and battery icon mirror the same information.
For devices with little input (my NAS for example), the device tile feels empty due to the icon size being reduced.
I believe a middle-ground can be met for design choices between V9.10.0 and V10.0.0. I’m not a GUI artistic but I do believe I have a sense of modern design choices, or “what-looks-good”, for software. Although, it all boils down to personal preference, my feedback would be to revert back to the original design with these additional design choices.
For Lights, includes the brightness percent within the colour indicator top right. The indicator, combined with the tile dimming, is enough to determine if the device is on/off.
For sensors, no revisions needed - unless I’m out-of-the-lop, a majority of sensors don’t feature button input locally, therefore a button for this device type isn’t needed. For spacing, the features status indicator should return to top right.
For battery powered devices, with the battery chosen as the status indicator, no revisions needed - the battery icon colouring should be enough to discern is charging/a battery change is required. Unless I’m mistaken, battery replacement/charging isn’t a concern unless it reaches sub 30%, depending on tolerance.
I am a fan of the speaker status indicator animation - for devices that move/make noise in the real world, create new animations that align with their purpose. For example; a fan device could have a animated wind icon to show it’s on, while dimming the tile with no animation while it is off - similar to the current speaker device tile.
I moved from Home Assistant maybe 2 months ago now because I was never happy with how my dashboards looked. I moved to Homey because the visuals were simple and appealing - and I personally wouldn’t want to lose that. But again, taste is personal preference!
I completely disagree on almost every point, and I would be very disappointed if Athom were to revert to the old design.
Tip: You can customize many of the new features and views in the advanced device settings under “Quick Actions.” This will make the button in the top-right corner of the Aqara FP300 sensor disappear, f.e.
There is one thing though that I hope they are able to accommodate. The change log of the new version indicates that there should now be more room available for text indicators.
I have several Advanced Virtual Devices with text indicators that span 3 rows. Except for the fact that in the new app there is only one row available for the indicator, though it is wider than before, I cannot hold as much information as in the old version. This means that I have to remove some of the previously displayed info. It’s not the end of the world of course, but it’s a pity that that information cannot be shown anymore.
As an example, such a device tile in the old and new app:
I agree with Your opinion. I didn’t received 10.0 update on my device yet but when I see Your post I am not liking it. My biggest concern is whether the turned off devices will be grayed out or not, as in the picture you posted (diner Longue Tv is off but is not greyed out - if so, it will severely disrupt the quick recognition of which device is on and which is not)
Maybe they should make an option to choose what design people want (old or new).
I went here exactly for this reason. On a galaxy s26 ultra, I only have 2 items per row which lead to a massive scroll to get to the bottom of devices. An option to choose the disposition would be greatly appreciated
Totally agree. After the update it is harder to get a quick overview of which device is on and off. Keeping the tile grayed out when off in addition to the new changes would have been better in my opinion.
I don’t think anyone asked for this upgrade. For me the most stupid thing is no greyed out device square when it is deactivated. I hope they won’t introduce this in the full version.
