Matter wifi devices very unstable

Hi,
I have a Homey Pro 2023 with 3 Matter devices connected over Wifi (2 SONOFF in-wall switches MINIR4M, 1 Meross Smart Plug mss315). The problem is that all these device get unreachable from time to time an while some recover others stay unreachable. All 3 devices were connected and set up properly through the Homey Android app and workd at the beginning. Note: While Homey Pro cannot reach them (timeout) they still work with other Android apps that I also use to control them. This leads me to the conclusion that the issue must be on Homey Pro’s end. I even disconnected, resetted and re-paired one of the devices but after some days I had the same problem again.

Has anyone made a similar experience? What could be reasons for the problem and how can it be fixed? And is there a way to get more information for debugging from Homey Pro, like status data or log files etc. which can help to analyze the problem?

Kind regards
Georg

Yes, I know that @Jamie has had similar issues with Matter devices disappearing, although I believe those were Thread devices, not WiFi.

Homey doesn’t provide any info or logs for this, so all you can do is try a reboot to see if that (temporarily) fixes it. And make sure that you submit a support request with Athom so they are aware of it.

Curious if Homey is unavailable from Athom cloud as well at those moments.
I use Net Scan app to both monitor my router and internet.

I’m also curious if you get a “Homey offline” message with this setting enabled,

during those ‘device unreachable’ events?

To see if “multi control” can be a factor:
Can you test with those devices solely paired & controlled with Homey? Longer than the “from time to time” interval (as you described it) of course.

Also, do you use reserved IP addresses for those devices?
Homey is not very good at (re-)discovering existing devices with a changed IP address

Hi Peter!

I will try the “Offline Warning” toggle to see what happens. However when the devices are unreachable then the Android App can normally reach Homey Pro. So it is not that the whole Homey Pro is offline.

Regarding “multi control”: I already tested this. And also devices that were not paired to any other app got unreachable unfortunately.

I have not set up static IP addresses. I could do so but honestly, I expect that Homey Pro can deal with it. Also, I doubt that IPs changed in the meantime.

Thanks again for your input!

I think in general it would be good if Homey Pro would have some features and reports built-in which allows you to monitor your device connections and their status and stability.

Cheers
Georg

Shouldn’t matter (:yum:), Matter uses IPv6 where DHCP isn’t relevant.

Oh I see haha. Thanks.

Dear all,
What is your experience with Matter wifi devices? Are they running stable on your Homey Pro 2023, also with flows? And do you have just one wifi router in your network or several access points or repeaters (mesh) like me? For me it currently does not work well at all.
Regards
Georg

Just FYI, the Athom support did not really show much interest in my problem so far and recently even stopped responding to my emails kindly asking for a status update. If the rest of the company is so dedicated like the support then things cannot go well sadly :frowning:

Unifi Cloud Gateway Max with multiple AP and VLAN. No mesh. This setup runs for about a month without any issue with Homey Pro 2023.
Prior to that, very similar setup but with Unifi Dream Router and also without any problem.

I have around 10 Matter wifi devices but from different brand. Tapo, SwitchBot and others

It’s probably not what any of us want to hear but it’s understandable that Homey support can’t be looking at our own network unless the bug is already identified. The community is probably your best bet.

Do you also have Zigbee network (philips hue for example) or close neighbours with other wifi networks that could cause interference? I would chech for channels overlaps.

If you have mesh network or other more advanced network features and the problem happen often, I would temporarily simplify the network to narrow it down.

I also wanted to add that couple of months ago I used to have the mss315 for about a week (without connectivity issue) but I returned it once I learned they were not using Matter standard for energy monitoring. Instead they use an http server

That’s probably the difference, Homey is known to have issues with mesh networks (as one of very few devices, most devices have no issues with it).

@Georg if it’s possible in your setup to “pin” a device (Homey) to a specific mesh point, try that.
