that is exactly what Iām curious about, I have Reolink cameraās and doorbell and do not want to use a google or Alexa screen. If it could show the live feed when triggered, then I would buy this ring thing.
Holy shit, what an absurd price! This is out of proportion. I really like the Portal and is a missing link in my smarthome. I would instant buy 3 a 4 units, but totally not with this price. Hell no.
There will indeed be a Flow card that lets you send a camera stream to Homey Portal, optionally together with a confirmation prompt, similar to the push notification Flow card. For example, you could show the camera feed when someone rings the doorbell and include a button to confirm opening the door.
Just like shown in the video here.
How should I connect the Aqara G410 doorbell hub to Homey ā via the Aqara app, directly, or via Matter? Because right now I canāt create an Advanced Flow that does that.
And yet its perfectly possible for consumer level security companies to do door bells and cameras on a large scale which are wifi or PoE and they generally cost +/- 5%
You talk about this like Athomās products up to this point arenāt already wifi or ethernet compatible
I just think itās a missed opportunity and low hanging fruit
PoE or 220v with an internal relay would have made it a must buy for me
Who wants to sacrifice a wall switch for something that canāt act as a relay?
What happens when your kids inevitably unplug it from the USB port in your kitchen and hide it somewhere?
I wonder which companies you mean. Those cheap PoE cameras from Aliexpress with the āCamHiā app (which is known for its many security vulnerabilities)?

Reolink appears to be oriented at small business, just like UniFi. UniFi doesnāt even have a Google Home or Alexa integration. Reolink cameras also come with features like a tamper switch and vandalism protection, something that you usually donāt need in a home environment
Ring doesnāt have PoE as far as I know

really like the look of the new Homey Portal, and I think 249 is a very fair and affordable price for what it offers.
Unfortunately, it launched just one month too late for me. I recently purchased a Rithum switch to do exactly what the Portal is designed for, which I also use to link back to my Homey Pro. The major benefit of the Rithum for my specific setup is that it mounts directly into standard electrical wall boxes, making the installation perfectly seamless.

Of course it is a mock-up, my point is they show something that is not for sale.
Iāve been following the Portal launch with a lot of interest, and I have to say the core idea is genuinely good: a physical, tactile control point that anyone in the room can use, without having to pull out your phone and open an app. Thatās exactly whatās been missing from this ecosystem for years, and Iām glad Athom is investing in it.
The problem is the price, and honestly I canāt justify it against what the product actually delivers.
Letās be clear: the Portal is not a hub. Itās an accessory that depends on a hub you already need to own or buy separately (Cloud, Pro Mini, Pro, or self-hosted). So the real cost isnāt ā¬249 (or ā¬299 once the intro pricing ends) ā itās ā¬249 plus whatever the underlying Homey system costs. On top of that, itās single-zone: if I want to cover the living room, kitchen, and bedroom, thatās nearly ā¬900 just in controllers, before even counting the hub.
Add to that:
- itās USB-C powered, so no battery ā it has to stay wired or near an outlet, which goes against the whole idea of a free-standing control point in the middle of a room;
- the screen is only 2.8ā, so what you can actually see and manage is fairly limited compared to even just the phone itās supposed to replace.
For a company thatās built its reputation on being a more open and affordable alternative to the usual closed ecosystems, this launch feels like itās going in the opposite direction: a premium-priced āheroā gadget that adds yet another layer of spend on top of a system that already requires a serious hardware investment to work well.
Iām not saying the product doesnāt make sense ā it does, and itās well designed. But at these numbers it risks staying a toy for a few enthusiasts with generous budgets, rather than being the tool that actually makes smart homes simpler for everyone, as the launch messaging claims. I hope Athom reconsiders the pricing, maybe with a more sensible multi-room bundle, because as it stands the value proposition just doesnāt hold up.

Suddenly, ā¬249 seems pretty easy to justify. At least thatās what Iām telling myself. Iām sold. The pre-order button won, my common sense lost.
