MYGGSPRAY motion sensors unreliable on Homey Pro mini / Matter over Thread

Hi,

I’m having persistent problems with three IKEA MYGGSPRAY motion sensors connected directly to a Homey Pro mini via Matter over Thread.

All three sensors were purchased at the same time, and all three show similar behaviour. They do work occasionally, but motion detection is extremely unreliable. Sometimes I can walk directly in front of a sensor, wave my hand in front of it, pick it up, move it around, or even stand only about 1 metre from the Homey Pro mini, and Homey still does not report motion.

The strange part is that motion may then appear in Homey several minutes later, even though I am no longer moving in front of the sensor.

Setup

  • Homey Pro mini

  • 3 × IKEA MYGGSPRAY motion sensors

  • Connected directly to Homey using Matter over Thread

  • MYGGSPRAY firmware: 1.1.4

  • Matter specification version shown in Homey: 1.4.0

  • All three show the same Thread network in Homey

  • Batteries currently show 100% after replacement

What I have already tried

A few days ago I had the same problem, so I:

  • replaced the batteries in all three sensors

  • factory-reset all three sensors

  • removed and paired them with Homey again

  • tested them very close to Homey

  • tested them in different rooms/locations

  • restarted the Homey mobile app

  • changed the Homey reporting interval settings back to Use Default

  • left the sensors completely still for several minutes before testing them again

The problem has returned after only a few days, so replacing batteries and re-pairing did not solve it.

Example of the problem

During one test I left MYGGSPRAY completely still for 2–3 minutes and confirmed in Homey that motion was OFF.

I then:

  • walked towards it

  • stood directly in front of it

  • waved my hand across the PIR sensor

  • picked it up

  • moved and shook it

  • walked past the Homey Pro mini with the sensor in my hand

Homey did not immediately register any motion.

A motion event eventually appeared later, but with a delay long enough that it would be completely unusable for lighting automation.

The Homey activity log also shows long periods where MYGGSPRAY does not report anything at all, despite people moving through the area.

Comparison with Tapo T100

I have also tested Tapo T100 motion sensors connected to a Tapo H100 hub, which is exposed to Homey through Matter Bridge.

The difference is huge.

The T100 detects motion consistently and almost immediately.

In the Tapo event log, while I am moving in front of the sensor, it reports motion approximately every 5 seconds:

  • 16:22:18

  • 16:22:23

  • 16:22:28

  • 16:22:32

  • 16:22:37

  • 16:22:42

  • etc.

Homey also receives the Tapo motion state reliably.

So Homey itself is clearly capable of receiving fast motion events. The problem appears specific to MYGGSPRAY / Thread / the way MYGGSPRAY communicates with Homey.

Other Matter / Thread devices

I also have other newer Matter devices in Homey, including IKEA devices and an Aqara U200. They are correctly listed as Matter accessories on my iPhone.

The three MYGGSPRAY sensors are also listed correctly there, so they appear to be commissioned properly.

Network

My Homey Pro mini is connected through an ASUS access point. Previously the ASUS was operating as a router, and I experienced the same MYGGSPRAY problems then as well.

The ASUS is now running in Access Point mode.

My 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi is currently using automatic channel selection. I am also investigating whether 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi / Thread interference could be contributing to the problem.

However, because all three MYGGSPRAY sensors behave similarly even when placed extremely close to the Homey Pro mini, I am unsure whether this is simply a Thread range/interference problem.

What makes this confusing

A friend of mine also uses MYGGSPRAY with a Homey Pro mini and says his sensors work normally.

He bought his sensors later than I bought mine.

Since all three of mine were purchased together, I am wondering whether there could potentially be:

  • a MYGGSPRAY firmware issue

  • a Homey Matter/Thread compatibility issue

  • a Thread network issue

  • interference

  • or possibly a production batch/hardware issue

Has anyone experienced MYGGSPRAY working initially and then becoming extremely slow, intermittent, or stopping motion reporting after a few hours/days?

If so, did you find a permanent solution?

I would especially be interested to know whether anyone solved this by:

  • changing Wi-Fi channels

  • improving the Thread mesh

  • using IKEA DIRIGERA and then sharing the sensors to Homey through Matter

  • changing IPv6 / multicast / mDNS settings

  • or replacing the MYGGSPRAY sensors with newer units

You could try to swap 1 MYGGSPRAY with Your friend or let him test one of Yours just to rule out HW failures.

The Thread network diagnostics app is a useful way to explore connectivity in Thread networks. I’ve used the Android app. I believe there is an iOS version too.

My experience with Ikea bulbs is that their range is disappointingly short.
