Fibaro Dimmer 2 - randomly turning on/off

Hey,

I’ve seen other people writing about similar issues on this topic a gew years ago (Fibaro Dimmer 2) but cant seem to find the answer so I’ll start fresh.

I have the Homey (early 2023). In my basement I have a motion sensor from IKEA that I had intended to turn on/off basement lights.

4 out of 5 light sources are smart lamps (Zigbee) and one is a Fibaro Dimmer 2 switch. The flow works well with the Zigbee light bulbs.

The Fibaro Dimmer 2 is turning on/off randomly. I’ve disconnected it from the motion sensor flow as its getting frustrating having a lamp that turns on and off with around 30 seconds inbetween.

Whats interesting to me is that I can see the Homey app displaying it turning on/off. So I was wondering if this could be due to settings/software?

Anyone who’s experienced the same issue and have a solution?

Many thanks!

This almost always means that some external source turned it on/off (or, more specifically, the app got a message from the device that it was turned on/off). Because the app then updates its internal status for the device, it looks like it was turned on/off by the app itself.

Thanks for the quick reply!

So… (scratches head, choosing words, with the hope of not sounding to much like a total noob)… does this mean that there is an issue with the fibaro homey app? Or could this be a fault connected to the installation?

My dad is an electrician and helped me install the dimmer, and it might be that he connected it wrong.

Looking at the device, it has an external input for a regular switch. When someone toggles that switch, the device sends a message to Homey that “hey, someone toggled the switch and I turned on/off”.

That’s almost always the sort of event that is causing the timeline messages that you’re showing. It’s not a bug in the app because it’s merely updating its internal state to reflect the actual device’s state.

I believe that Z-Wave devices can be associated with each other so they can talk to each other directly, could that possibly be the case here?

Thanks. Do you mean that another Z-wave device would be the root cause of the dimmer turning on/off? I only have one Z-wave device and thats the dimmer 2 (got it from a colleague), so I dont think thats the reason here.

Is there a way to see (in advanced settings in the dev mode/settings) what is turning the dimmer on/off?

Thinking that if there is a way to see that the device was turned on by the phisical dimmer or not.

Also noteworthy, when a dimmer (or light) is off, and dimmed up, the app log you showed shows “turned on by [app name]”;
Same goes for a turned on light dimmed to zero, then it shows “turned off by [app name]”

This are ways to reveal more detailed “whodunit” info, maybe it reveals a bit more about the dimmer!
1.

This flow is less ‘heavy’ on Homey than the flow above:

Nice! Will look into that! Thanks

Hello @Christ0ffer did you find a solution ?

One of my Dimmer 2 started doing the same behaviour since 2 days (the dimmer is 10 months old)

I’ve already try to factory reset the dimmer, delete and add it to Homey, unplug homey and still the same… I’ve the feeling it’s a hardware problem… Is it possible it comes from the by-pass 2 ?

Thanks

Hey @Julien_Moors ,

Ironically enough it skind of solved itself. I think the thing that solved it was that I removed any old or additional flows that used any of the same units. But I’m not going to swear that its what solved it. They sort of live their own life and right now they are working.

Thank you for your answer ! After some tests, it happens when light is on 100% (>30w) ! When I set ± 80% (>30w), it stay stable…

Quick feedback:

  • I installed another Fibaro Dimmer → Same problem
  • I installed another Bypass → Same problem
  • I tried another light (same as the ones in my kitchen) → Same problem
  • I calibrated the original Fibaro Dimmer with another light (a different model from another brand) and reinstalled it in my kitchen (where it was originally) → It works!

I guess I was lucky when I installed it the first time. It works now, so I won’t touch it anymore.
