[App][Pro] Homey Tracks

I have published a new test version that should fix the syncing of zones back to OwnTracks in HTTP mode.

Hi, you know there’s already an app for this, but I’ll be super happy when an update comes out again.

Adrian wrote his version of that app because the developer mentioned he hasn’t got time to work on his app.

I did try that but it was missing features that I wanted and hasn’t been updated for 3 years. I posted a message on the forum but by the time I got a sort of response, I had already started my own app because I thought it had been abandoned.

I tried to look at the GitHub repo that was linked in the app store, but that looked like it was for an older version.

Good to hear that a new app is being worked on. I’ve been using the “old” one for years and have actually never had any problems. I also use the “Recorder” in Docker because I enjoy cycling and that way I can review my route afterwards.

This app will record your route and display it in the app settings.

I agree what is the difference with the existing app ! Are there additional features otherwise just combining the apps to one would make sense

Why would you need that you have apps like strava or other apps for this purpose but why not incorporate them in one app

That’s great! I have just one more question. If I press “Publish settings” and “Publish waypoint” in OwnTracks on my mobile, do these appear in your app just like in the old app? I understand that it works the other way around in your app as well.

There are lots of additional features, that’s why I wrote it. The old app fell short of what I wanted in many ways and it seems unlikely it would get updated any time soon, if ever.

Apps, that are developed by different community users are independent, and not always open source, so collaboration is not always welcome or easy. The app this one replaces hasn’t been updated for 3 years and the GitHub source code is not up-to-date with the store version. When I reached out to the developer, they said they didn’t have time to work on it, but to submit pull requests. But if the code is so far out of date, there is no point me making changes to it and hoping the dev might find some time in the future to look at it and adapt the changes to the newer code.

Obviously, every user has a choice as to which one they install, so having different options is not all bad, even if it can be a bit confusing for user to decide which one to go for.

I’m not sure about “Publish settings” as I can’t find that option on the Android app, but waypoints are automatically synchronised in both directions. So if you define a waypoint in the OwnTracks app, it will appear in the Homey Tracks app as a personal waypoint. You can then move it to the Shared waypoints or copy it to another user as you wish.

I have to make an admission. I have been saying the code on GitHub for the Location and Presence app was for an old version, but I just checked again and it seems that is wrong. I’m not sure why I got confused about that but maybe when I searched before I found a different repo, as the store has no link to it. So I apologise to Menno for the miss-information.

I am also curious if your app will actually go online and be approved in the Homey app store. There were also two developers working on an app simultaneously, only one of which is actually online in the Homey app store. And the other one is there too, but never approved by Homey.

Thanks Adrian!

I checked the zones, but zones created in homey tracks are not visible in owntracks. No matter the type of zone, shared or private.

Tested on iPhone17

Everything else seems to work fine!! Awesome!!!

Cheers,

Eric

Of course I won’t know that until I submit it to be published live, but it will always be available in test

Is that with version 1.0.4?

I’m about to push 1.0.5 to test, so maybe try again with that. If it still doesn’t work I will need to bight the bullet and reconfigure my setup back use HTTP again.

Hi Adrian,

I just checked in version 1.0.5.

Homey is on version 13.5.0-rc.2.

I created a new zone in homey tracks, London.

Unfortunately this zone is not available in owntracks. Restarted owntracks, but still no zone ‘London’

My version of owntracks is 26.2.3/nl_NL

One other thing I would like to ask.

When I add a new zone in Homey tracks, the default loction is London. Would it be possibble to use my current location or otherwise use homey’s location?

Thanks again Adrian!

If logs van help, I enabled the logs so let me know what you need if it helps you!

Cheers,

Eric

One of the conditions when using HTTP is you need to push the location to get the zones back. Basically HTTP is a one-way street, so Homey can’t contact your phone and has to wait for the OwnTracks app to post an update, where it then returns any waypoints, etc, in the response.

I have just had another thought, make sure the Remote commands and Remote configuration are enabled in its advanced settings so it can receive the waypoints.

Hi Adrian,

I enabled all settings in adv.settings and…. I get zones from homey tracks in owntracks!!

You did it, Nice work!!

Cheers Adrian!

Eric

H Adrian,

Thanks for the additional features/updates!!

Great App works well. Thanks Adrian
