[APP][Pro] Amazon - Alexa

Hi @Jamie ,

Would like to ask you whether is it possible to add the Alexa thermostat to the homey pro app?

Thank you so much.

I was going to ask the same thing as I discovered itā€™s only available in the Alexa app and canā€™t be seen by any other hubs.

This is the one I have. Amazon Smart Thermostat https://a.co/d/b4XT2Xn

I installed the beta version to get support for my new Alexa model. How do I get onto the official version?

Hi, have the same thermostat but cannot find the thermostat in the Alexa app of homey.

Hello, Iā€™ve been trying in vain to connect my Echo Dot 4 Gen, but every time it says it couldnā€™t find any device.
what can i try to solve this problem? Thanks

@Berna_T - I dont think it is possible to send images to an Echo show, or perhaps I dont understand what your asking? Can you give an example?

@TK1 - Yes it is possible, (there are some other third party devices already available such as ecobee) but it requires a bit of work (images, serials etc) it is really difficult if I donā€™t own the device myself. If enough people ask for it I will consider it.

@Pascalpvl - I think that the Amazon Thermostat doesnt actually have an alexa in it right?

Link the Amazon Smart Thermostat to an Alexa-enabled device at home

This app is for the alexa enabled devices, because I have an ecobee at home (which has its own app) iā€™ve never tried altering thermostats before, I dont have any plans to do so at this point. \

@provanguard - there is just the one version of the app at the moment (5.3.14) no matter of your on the beta channel or the stable channel your using the same app.

@Ludovic Are you sure its an Echo Dot gen4 and not gen 5? Are you connected to the right server?
Perhaps send through a diagnostic report of you connecting and also trying to add it, I cant promise ill have time to look at it though.

thanks

@Jamie Iā€™m sorry, youā€™re right, it is indeed an Echo Dot gen 5

thanks!

Did you have any luck? I am having exactly the same problem - tried all the mentioned possible fixes, but I keep on being bounced to the 404.

Looks like it is this request that is being redirected to the 404

@Jamie - not sure if it is helpful, but I created a diagnostic report - 12b1d802-a8f5-46d6-b690-78cc306f684e

Notes:

  • tried on both web app (I know, should use the mobile app) & the mobile app
  • have logged into amazon via web (on mobile) first and tried, logged everything out and tried
  • uninstalled / restarted the homey amazon alexa app

@Ludovic - I purchased a Gen5 just now as part of the prime day sales, so ill add support shortly.

I received a diagnostic log,

One error message: error is not defined
I have disconnected, after change amazon-password, because I thought I have to reenter it New homey 2023 with ethernet and Wifi on

2023-07-10T11:55:44.507Z [log] [App] Alexa-Remote: Response: 401 Unauthorized
2023-07-10T11:55:44.508Z [log] [App] api:postConnection:catch Error: Error while checking Authentication: Error: 401 Unauthorized
2023-07-10T11:55:44.839Z [log] [App] api:getConnection false
2023-07-10T11:55:44.921Z [log] [App] Alexa-Remote: Sending Request with {"host":"layla.amazon.de","path":"/api/bootstrap?version=0","method":"GET","timeout":10000,"headers":{}}

It is throwing a 401 error, ie it is not authorized, all I can suggest is that you make sure your mobile and homey are on the same network and try restarting the app before attempting to connect.

It could be a bigger issue where amazon have changed something and they have started rolling it out. Is this the first time you have tried to connect?

I had the same problem
perhaps it was my report?
With a new connect, after disconnect, I never got a new login screen
Iā€˜ve deleted the app and after reinstall it, I could log in with user an password
Some work to correct the flows, because the devices were new

Always make sure that you are on the same network as homey, if you turn offf wifi on your phone you wonā€™t be able to connect.

@Jamie I first installed and connected the homey skill and it works fine, then I installed the amazon alexa app which connects fine but canā€™t find echo dot gen5.

Hi Jamie
Yes, I was in the same wifi
The problem was after disconnecting, that the login-ui was not there.
With reinstall, I got the login-ui

Hey everyone and specifically @vtr42

Today I woke up with a review from @vtr42 for 1 star, because the application doesnā€™t support something it never said it did support.

image

Victor this idea of negative feedback in order to get results, doesnā€™t work with pets and it doesnā€™t work with people. Especially people who are volunteering their time and efforts to provide a service (for free) to a community.

Especially when you should know better, if you canā€™t observe how something functions, then is is near on impossible to replicate and automate.

Reviews like this @vtr42 from entitled people complaining and making demands are exactly why

  1. Rarely publish/share my new apps to the appStore.
  2. I am happy to remove my apps when people cant read the instructions.
  3. Stop updating apps and adding new devices.

@vtr42 your review is the same as if I were to give France a 1 star review ā€¦ with out visiting and because they donā€™t have the The Great Pyramid of Giza.

So rather then sitting back and throwing around negative reviews and complaints like @vtr42

Please read what devices are supported before installing. Or read the post on whats required (by athom) in order to add a new device Or ā€¦ just uninstall the app.

Thanks

Hi,

I understand your point but even though it might be difficult, try to understand why people are making such complains. This is not targeted to you as an individual and Iā€™ll be happy to rephrase and update my comment (even though I donā€™t think I can, there is no edit button).

First of all, Iā€™ll be happy to contritube but I have found nowhere the link to any GitHub repository or equivalent. If you take a look at the homey app page description there is nothing that says the app is only compatible with a subset of devices. It should be clear at the top that only a subset of Amazon devices are supported.

400E for a device is expansive (homey pro) and making an app for Alexa when itā€™s one of the biggest and one of most important app for the assistant ecosystem, raises the bar in term of what people can expect in term of quality/support. The app will obviously target comments like this from people that want to make the most of their Homey. Again itā€™s not you, donā€™t take it personally like that. If youā€™re alone working on the app, itā€™s already a huge and awesome work! And if youā€™re indeed working alone on this, and marketed by Homey as the way to go app, you should be able to get some help either from Homey or from the rest of the community or both. It will allow to tackle the missing device support or anything else people are complaining about.
Alexa app is one of the biggest feature, I wouldnā€™t have bought Homey if the app didnā€™t exist.

Iā€™ll be happy to edit/remove my comment and contribute directly.

Jamie please donā€™t let that discourage you, we are a lot of people who love your app and canā€™t see the homey being any good without it, I personally canā€™t tbh. Your app is what makes homey perfect in the end, cause I use Alexa for almost everything now, without Alexa (your app which makes it possible to use routines and everything) the homeys native connection to Alexa is only a voice connection and thats not enough for me.

Dont let silly reviews get you down, think of all the good reviews and all of us who loves your app. We may not be able to afford paying you for it but we do love it and appreciate you

Iā€™ve removed my comment. Seems my comment has been took personally where it was not my intention.
Again, happy to contribute, saw a bunch of requests about missing support for newer devices, I canā€™t be the only one missing out from this (plus the 5 stars reviews also asking for missing support).

Hi,
I am working with HP2023 and Alexa. There are nice features and easy handling with Alexa.
If I want to play at song unfortunatelly it tooks up to 20seconds (140Mbit/s Modem) or sometime it stops without output until next command. Additional some days later I also lost connection to Amazon.
In principial the app is working fine.

I donā€™t think you realize that @Jamie is getting nothing of that 400E. The app is a community app aka its made by the public who are nothing to do with Athom other than wanting to add support to their Homey. Community developers are giving up their own time (and sanity) to create apps that interact with devices. I am mid way creating a app for the Duco air handling system, which has taken me ages and caused lots of stress due to having no technical documents and having to reverse engineer their propriety API. I am not after sympathy, more of, understanding from people that once released, it may not be perfect but its better than no support at all and Alexa integration is same thing. Athom (Who you paid you 400 too) didnā€™t create a app so @Jamie did, commend him for that and most of all, read the thread of the forum (aka do your research), as this will tell you that there is WIP for the next version of the Dot. If you find instances where an device is not supported, request it to be supported and do your bit for the community by reading the guide (see below) what @jamie made to help him out adding the device to the app unless its been requested before.

Ok thanks for clarifying. I would suggest to put the warning on Ā« not all devices supported yet Ā» on the homey app description page in the homey App Store plus a link to the page mentioning.

It could be nice for Homey to offer a paid model in a way to give developers Ā« rewards Ā» for the time spent in this. For instance, one device if free, more you have to pay something. I donā€™t know how much donations are given. Or build a more open source ecosystem because I guess the code is not open-source which donā€™t help in getting other contributions.

@Jamie let me know if you need help around this. Do you provide past SVG files?

Ā« 1. SVG of the new device in the same aesthetic as the other icons I have.
2. An image of the device ideally 2000x2000px in the same aesthetic as the other images I have (white background etc). Ā»

Iā€™m also opened if needed to test and report back with diagnostic reports.
