Has anyone had any success controlling a “smart” thermostat locally through the Homey Pro? I’ve seen a few old threads on the topic and there are a handful of recommendations on Athom’s Best Buy Guide ( Smart Thermostats | Best Buy Guide ) but I’m not sure if any of them meet the requirements I’m looking for (or if they do, they aren’t available in the US).
The basic idea is that I’d like to be able to control my thermostats through the Homey Pro, but I don’t want a third-party server in the middle for reliability and privacy reasons. As far as I know this rules out most (all?) wifi options, because they tend to require linking accounts and Homey talking to their servers, even if they have a native Homey app. Some even require paid subscriptions to access all features, which is an automatic disqualifier for me.
The way I have avoided this issue in my other devices is to go with Z Wave or Zigbee devices, since those can only connect to the local mesh network. But thermostat options look very limited - on Homey’s “best buy” list there are only two non-wifi options, and neither is available in the US. I’m not opposed to wifi in principle, but it isn’t clear to me from the marketing materials if any of the wifi options allow the Homey to connect locally, or if they all connect via third party servers. There are a couple Z Wave thermostats that are available in the US (Honeywell T6 Z Wave is the most mentioned) but as far as I can find they don’t work with the Homey at all.
Has anyone else found a solution that allows them to see and control a thermostat locally? Not looking to do anything crazy - just switching between heat/cool/off and changing the temperature setting would be sufficient. Ideally I’m looking for something available in the US, though I’d be interested to hear about any and all such successes.
