Philips Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor in combination with Zigbee bulbs or Zigbee power socket

Good afternoon,

I recently installed a security camera at our fence. It’s for monitoring our cars outside at night, but it’s a bit too dark to get a good/clear image around our cars. I now want to install two garden spotlights with GU10 fittings) in combination with a Philips Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor. The idea is that the lights turns on automatically, when someone comes within 10 meters of our fence.

I’m using an Aeotec Zigbee Range Extender, and I’m wondering which is more convenient/practical: a Philips Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor in combination with two GU10 Philips Hue (Zigbee) bulbs, or a Philips Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor combined with two regular 2 GU10 Philips LED bulbs connected to a Zigbee power socket. Does anyone have one of these setups? And does it work very well?

Thanks in advance for any responses!

Functionally it will be the same, both will work.

Advantage of the Zigbee power socket is:

  • Lots of choice in what light you Connect. If you need much light the hue spots might not be bright enough?

  • Probably a lot cheaper

  • Easy to add an additional light

Disadvantage of zigbee socket

  • you cannot change colors (But do you need that)

I will go for the Zigbee power socket.

Thank you for your advise

If I were you, I would get a better camera that has good night vision.

Be aware that if the camera is in the night vision function, you then illuminate with the 2 lights, the camera must first set up again for daytime and must focus again!

Invest the money better in the cameras than in additional light, which may only make you more insecure at night, since it is even though there is no person at the cars. The motion detector cannot distinguish between person and movement, but a good camera can…

I have Reolink Trackmix PoE camera’s, with goodnight vision function. I just need more extra light when people is in the near of our cars.

Ahh Ok, yes they are not so bad :+1:t3:

Recognize that…

In noghtmode the IR-cut filter is switched away from the lens. Switching on lights requires the IR-cut filter.

you could think about buying a strong IR red light iso normal lights. That would provide extra light for you camera without the switch (but you will not see colors)

Or check out a “starlight” camera. These have nightvision in color

I never heard about Starlight cameras, this seems very nice. But for me no option to switch to another cameras. I have my Reolink Trackmix cameras about 4 weeks now. I like the pan and tilt, auto track functions. It has a very clear picture, even at night with a little extra light :slightly_smiling_face:

I would like to point out once again that the lights tackle every movement which is registered by the motion detector, even if there is no person on site. Hope, the lights will keep tackling and you think that a person is there! This can then be very unsettling…

Ps: From Reolink there are also very good cameras with night vision and person recognition…

I have this one and i`m very happy: Reolink RLC-823A 16X | 4K PoE IP Camera with 16X PTZ and Auto Tracking | Reolink Official

Yes i am aware that the Philips Hue is very sensitive for very movement ( even by pets and cars ), but it’s the best outdoor Zigbee motion at this moment. Fortunly I can choose in the Trackmix software settings only recording by detecting of persons, and also the distance can be set. This is working great.

Your Reolink RLC-823A is a monster of a camera, very nice! I am very curious how these cameras will react in the winter months when it will freeze. I am also curious how the Philips Hue moton senser will react!

It depends on what winter means for you? With us it sometimes gets in winter - 10° Celsius  I have now had my camera since approx. 2 years and she has done it without problems. And probably noticed, it is completely exposed to the weather.

Nice to hear. Here is the winter between -5 tot -10.

Today I tested one spot lite with a Philips GU10 4.6 watt, 355 Lumen ( 2700K ), the light output is more then enough for the Trackmix, very nice cleare image around the cars. This will be even better when I will use the second spot light

In the weekend I will hang the Philips Hue Motion sensors and both spot lights!

Thus, the temperature should not be a problem.

Good luck :+1:t3::smiley:

Maybe you can show a snapshot at night…

I installed de Philips Hue Motion sensor. I make a little automation in Homey, when it dedect motion, then the Zigbee socket go on for 10 seconds. This works great. But by day light , it turns also the Zigbee socket on. Does anyone know how to turn the Zigbee socket only in the evening / night when it’s dark, when the Philips Motion dedect motion?

You could add the inverted “and it is daytime” card as condition.
This only allows the flow to continue during sunset to sunrise:

The hue motion sensor also measurues lux, so you can use that as an additional AND card

AND (logic card) lux < 5 (or another value)

The way I did it myself is

1 create a virtual device “its light”

2 create a group of lux sensors (front yard, back yard, driveway)

3 use the middle value of the 3 to switch the virtual device

Most of the times the driveway triggers the “its dark” and front yard triggers the “its light”

I mounted independent IR lightpanels to help the weak ir of my camera’s. Looks as if the whole garden is lit in b/w.

What lightpanel did you use?

Satisfies with the amount of light?

Is it visible IR or the invisble range

Yes, I modified my flow with a sunset rule, the lighting problem in daylight is now solved. Thank you Peter.

I will try also try the lux possibility in logic card. Just to try out. Thank you FKey.
