My first advanced flow

I am learning… When testing my first advanced flow gets stuck, see red arrow in attached screenshot. I have no clue about what is wrong. Can someone please help me? Thanks.

In that flowcard you are checking whether the temperature is less than 19.5 degrees. The card can have three results:

  • The temperature is indeed below 19.5: then the condition is true and the flow proceeds with the blue top right connector
  • The temperature is equal to or above 19.5: then the condition is false and the flow proceeds with the orange bottom right connector. You have not connected anything there, so the flow stops.
  • The flowcard ran into an error: then the flow continues via the red connector in the bottom center.

Since the condition is false the orange path is followed, but nothing is connected, so the flow stops.

Sorry. You already lost me. If it is false I do not want it to do anything, like the flow above.
Or if I do not want it to do anything, to what action should an orange line then go? Thanks in advance. As I said, I am a beginner…

A WHEN card has a single output, that happens when that condition is triggered.

An AND card has three outputs, it is comparing a condition with a value, if that comparison is true the top right output is followed. If the comparison is false (like in your example) the bottom right output is followed. If the test fails/errors for any reason, the bottom centre Error output is followed.

If any of the three output points are not connected to anything, then no further actions are taken (like in your example).

All three outputs are optional, so it is up to you if you want any of those output conditions to do something or not.

After checking I think I have got it. Question remains: in case of false where I do not want it to do anything, what action do you recommend for the orange line(s) to go to? Thanks for your help.

If you don’t want the flow to do anything, then simply don’t connect anything to the orange/false connector .

The reason why you see the flow stop on screen, is because you are running the flow in test mode. I assume you clicked the play button in the trigger card (‘De tijd is 8:30’). By hitting the play button the flow editor moves through your flow, so you can see what is happening. It stopped at the second card (as you intended), because the condition was not met.

You can exit the test mode by clicking the close (‘Sluiten’) button in the bottom of the screen.

Your flow will automatically execut at 8:30 (tomorrow).

Hi everybody. Thank you very much for your very helpful comments. Great forum!

I forgot to mention that you can use multiple WHEN and/or AND cards and combine their outputs with a proceeding ANY or ALL card (note that ALL cards don’t really work following multiple WHEN cards, as it’s rare that multiple WHEN cards trigger at the same time).

Similarly you can have multiple THEN cards if you want to perform multiple actions, and they can either be parallel, so they all happen simultaneously, or you can link them in series one after another if they need to happen in an order.

And you can use the Flow WHEN and THEN cards to start other Flows (to be economical with your WHEN triggers, as they consume resources). For example, if you want a bunch of different things to happen at 8am you could have a Flow with a WHEN time is 8am card start several other Flows that might have sensors trigger them usually, but you want them all to happen at 8am, so include a Start card, or Flow WHEN this Flow is started with a Yes/No for example and have an ANY card link the Start/WHEN Flow card and your sensor WHEN card. Then you don’t have to repeat your logic and actions.

I hope that makes sense. The possibilities are endless

Thanks. Learning and making progress!
