This is because your phone only can use Wifi.
They actually mean: connect to the same subnet, or segment as you call it. Of course it doesn’t matter whether devices are connected by Wifi or by Lan, as long as it’s the same subnet, like 192.168.1.x

Having it connected by LAN is also preferable.
