Install app in my homeyaccount

Perhaps you activated accidentily a free Homey Cloud account? There, youbcan only add 5 devices and only official apps.

Update – I found a workaround and possibly an important clue

I have been in contact with Homey Support about this issue, and they have asked me several troubleshooting questions. I have provided them with the requested information, but so far the cause of the problem has not been identified.

In the meantime, I have now found a workaround that allows me to install Homey apps.

If I open homey.app through the Google app on my iPhone, the Homey website opens in Google’s built-in browser. I can log in with my existing Homey/Athom account and successfully install apps. I have now installed three apps this way, and it works.

However, the same process still does not work in Safari or through the Homey iOS app.

In Safari and in the Homey app, when I try to install an app, I am taken to accounts.athom.com and asked to select my account. After selecting my account, instead of being redirected back to the app installation, I am sent to the public Homey Pro sales page.

The same problem also occurs when I try to access Homey Support through the normal support process.

What is particularly interesting is that the problem disappears when I use the Google app’s built-in browser. This suggests that something in the authentication/redirect process is being handled differently there compared with Safari and the browser used by the Homey app. It could possibly involve cookies, the login session, or the redirect/callback process, although I cannot determine which part is causing the problem.

I have also tested with iCloud Private Relay completely turned off, cleared Safari history and website data, closed all Safari tabs, deleted and reinstalled the Homey app, and completely restarted my iPhone. None of this fixed the problem in Safari or the Homey app.

I have also discovered another important detail.

If I open community.homey.app in Safari, I am taken to the same Homey/Athom account selection page. When I select my account there, the authentication works correctly and I am successfully redirected back to the Homey Community.

This means that authentication and redirection through Safari do work for the Homey Community. The problem therefore seems to be more specific: in Safari, the redirect works correctly for community.homey.app, but when I try to install an app through homey.app, selecting the same account redirects me to the Homey Pro sales page instead of back to the app installation.

Interestingly, app installation through homey.app does work when I open it using the Google app’s built-in browser on the same iPhone.

So at least I now have a workaround: homey.app via the Google app works, while Safari and the Homey iOS app still redirect me to the Homey Pro sales page.

I have shared this new information with Homey Support as well, and I hope it may help them identify the cause. I also wanted to post it here in case anyone else experiences the same problem.

Just a thought: is this all happening on your phone? If so do you have a different device/PC through which you can go to the Homey App Store and try to install an app?

Thanks for the suggestion! Yes, the problem occurs on my iPhone, both in the Homey app and in Safari. I don’t have a personal computer.

I’ve found a workaround on my iPhone: if I access the Homey App Store through the Google app’s built-in browser, I can log in and install apps. However, the Homey app and Safari still redirect me to the Homey sales page. Support is looking into the issue, but it hasn’t been resolved yet.

Is anyone else having trouble installing apps through the Homey app on an iPhone?

You’re welcome.

I have a hunch that this is related to a setting on your iPhone. As I am able to login and install apps on my iPhone/iPad or PC.

You mention that you use Safari on your iPhone. Is that the default internet browser on your phone? If so then Safari is also used under the hood for the login process in the Homey app.

Could you try clearing Safari’s cache, by going - on your iPhone - to Settings > Apps > Safari > Clear history and website data. Then try the install app process again.

Thanks for trying to help! I’ve already cleared Safari’s history and website data several times, restarted my iPhone, and even deleted and reinstalled the Homey app. Unfortunately, it’s still sending me to the sales page. I wish it were that easy to fix!

As a test, could you install the Chrome browser on your phone and next make it the default browser (via Settings). This last step is key.

Force close the Homey app.

Then try to install apps via:

  • The Chrome browser (you’ll need to log in to your Homey account the first time);
  • The Homey app;

Does it work then?

Thanks for the suggestion! A little progress  I set Chrome as my default browser and successfully installed an app through Chrome. But the Homey app is still being stubborn — I still can’t install apps from there!

Then I suspect it is Safari related. You mentioned that you already turned off ‘private relay’ and cleared the cache.

Some thoughts / thing you might want to try:

  • Is perhaps ‘Block pop-ups’ enabled?
  • Or do you have an extension installed in Safari that may cause this behavior?
  • Or maybe ‘Block all cookies’ (in the Advanced Settings section) is enabled?

Thanks for the suggestions! I tried turning off “Block Pop-Ups” and cleared Safari’s history and website data again, but I still ended up on the Homey sales page. I’ve since turned the pop-up blocker back on.

I also checked that I have no active Safari extensions and that “Block All Cookies” is already off.

Interestingly, I can log in to both the Homey Community forum and my.homey.app through Safari using the same login details without any problems. However, when the Homey app sends me to accounts.athom.com and I log in, I’m redirected to the Homey sales page.

Installing apps through Chrome works, but installing them through the Homey app still doesn’t. Thanks again for helping me troubleshoot this!

Too bad that was not the solution.

Could you describe the steps you take how you install an app in the Homey mobile app?

Normally you don’t install apps yourself, but Homey installs it when you go through the ‘Add new device’-process (via the + button on the Devices tab).

Self installation is possible though via the + button in the Apps section in the More (…) tab.

Which of the two routes are you following and do they both result in the issue you described?

One other thing to check: are there any restrictions set for Safari in your iPhones screen time settings (Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions) that may cause this issue?

Thank you for your suggestions! I had been using More (…) → Apps → +, then selecting an app and tapping Install. After selecting my account, I’m redirected to the Homey sales page.

I’ve now tried the other route via Devices → +. I picked an app at random to test this—Anker SOLIX—and it installed successfully! It now appears in my installed apps.

I also checked Screen Time: Safari is allowed and Web Content is set to Unrestricted. Temporarily turning off Content & Privacy Restrictions made no difference.

So the “Add new device” route worked for this app, but installing through Apps → + still redirects me to the sales page.

That’s great .

I personally never install apps via the App section in the More tab. If I deliberately want to install an app (e.g. to force an update or install an app that has no devices) I go to the Homey App Store website and install it from there. That route is also working in your case, if I understand you correctly. Also the route via the Add new device works.

I do agree that it remains odd that the route via More > Apps does not work in your case. Maybe Athom is able to track down the issue based on the tests/checks you have performed based on our discussion.

The + icon in More->Apps opens the app store website in your default browser. So that should be the same as just opening the page manually.

Wow… I was considering to buy a Homey Pro, but if this really happens? It sucks… is this normal or an incident?

That is definitely not normal, and it’s the first time I’ve ever heard of something like this.

Hi, I have some great news!

I borrowed my daughter’s iphone, installed the Homey app and logged in with my own account and login details. I then tried installing an app through the Homey app on her phone, and it worked!

After that, I went back to the Homey app on my own iphone and tried installing an app there too — and now it works! I’m no longer being redirected to the Homey sales page.

I’m not sure what changed, but something seems to have resolved the issue!
