Homey with Matter devices, how do you update firmware?

Hi there!

I’ve been using Homey Pro for a few years and it’s been working well. However I recently stumbled upon an issue where I bought a power socket from “Eve” that you supposedly can use to toggle the socket on/off and also monitor its power consumption.

Turns out that the power consumption feature is only possible after a device firmware update has been applied. But unfortunately Homey Pro can’t be used to update device firmware for Matter devices, so I guess the only way is to use something else like Apple Homekit or Google Home to perform the actual upgrade. I currently don’t have any of those, and I don’t really want to either if I’m honest becuase it kinda defeats one important purpose with Homey (having a single hub that works with multiple protocols, multiple vendors and multiple device types).

There is a share matter device option in Homey, and I was wondering if that would allow you to add the device that needs an upgrade to Google Home, and maybe even leave it in a shared state to make sure it keeps the most recent firmware version over time.

  • Do you think Homey will support firmware updates for matter devices in the future?
  • How do you guys handle situations like these? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Sure, I should’ve done a bit more research before posting. But I’m still curious if people use the Google ecosystem in a similar way. And ultimately speculate a little bit whether Homey will support matter firmware updates in the future, or not. Having two hubs is suboptimal.

I wonder if it is possible to combine Homey Pro with a Google TV Streamer to get similar functionality as combining it with Apple Homekit. It sounds like it should work but it is not very tempting to purchase one more device just to find out.

Have you tried it?

No one can tell you that.

No, I haven’t tried it because I don’t have a Google hub.
