I think you miss understand.
Well i know how do a backup of a flow by using ALT key to export the flow.
But it should be a normal backup to have it like:
flows and other stuff separated. in a backup.
Not needed to have a app or stuff. Just provide a normal backup service…
You’ll find several suggestions for improvements to the backup feature/service on this forum. You might want to add your requests/ideas to the dedicated topic: Ideas & Suggestions - Homey Community Forum or reach out to Athom directly via Support | Homey.
In the meantime, there are alternatives. Like the Flow Version History app mentioned by @smarthomesven above or the manual export/import option you were referring to yourself.
Note that restoring a workable flow may also require the restore of variables, devices and apps that are no longer available/installed on your Homey. Maybe that’s why Homey currently only has the option to restore a full backup, as that covers all those additional elements.
I have no idea how they think, but the backup service paid is **** so to say.
Well, like I said.Paid and learned 10€
No good to use, unless to change unit or something when you might need a full backup, then it might be Ok?
I will use the export/import using the ALT key of flows and take the unit offline to make backup like I used to. It’s not expensive but still, no good for a 10€. “It should be a normal local backup function”
----> I don’t recommend the paid backup service for people <—
I have to say, that the paid backup has saved me from a lot of pain when my Homey Pro 23 died a while ago. If there was no backup, I wouldn’t have been able to restore my system to the replacement Homey.
For 10€ a year, that is great value for the money.
Now it would be nice, to have version control for advanced flows that you could return to a previous version of the flow.
As far as I am aware, you don’t need to reset your Homey. You can restore a cloud backup from within the Homey app. It will then override your devices, flows, setting and insights. It will also download the latest stable version of any missing apps that the restored devices use. In essence you go back to the point in time when the backup was made.
My experience with backups:
I am subscribed to the cloud backup service. As a safeguard should I have to replace my Homey and I cannot make a local backup anymore. I have used the backup to migrate from my prior to my current Homey.
For individual flows I both make an export and I use my browser’s print function to create a PDF version of the flow after my final edits. The latter comes in handy when a flow breaks (e.g. due to the device/app not paired/installed any more or you accidentally delete a variable used in a flow). Homey then greys-out the related flowcards and/or tags/variables and it is difficult to determine which flowcard you placed there originally. The PDF print is a picture of the flow showing all flowcards/tags/variables. So the missing info is still in there. Yes, it is extra work to make a print, but it helped my quite some times.
While editing flows I save them regularly. I use the earlier mentioned Flow Version History app to be able to restore a prior version should I mess up a flow while editing.
So multiple types of (flow) backups for different purposes.
Yep. That’s why I think the backup service is (hurty words)
But like I said earlier.
I do export/import by using the ALT -key when it comes to my flows, and I need to take it offline and make a backup using rpiboot (user partition)or full backup
Just a question. I understand that there is a problem with backup only flows.
But what is the problem that when you can only make a full backup that you have to reset the full device to restore a full backup? Then you know that all the hickups are gone.
Backup could be very handy. But what happens when you restore the flows after you have renamed a couple of devices or moved them to another zone? Will the flows then still working?
Yes, if you only use devices in your Flows then they will stay working, the IDs are the same. If you use zone activity then you’ll need to change the zone in the Flow afterwards.
